o South San Francisco-Based Veracyte Prices IPO

South San Francisco -- Shares of South San Francisco-based Veracyte began trading on the NASDAQ Wednesday, hours after the thyroid cancer diagnostics company priced its initial public offering (IPO). The company is selling 5 million shares for $13 each, the low end of its expected price range of $13-$15. Shares, now trading on the NASDAQ Global Market under the symbol "VCYT," were down 1% by midday. The IPO comes four months after Veracyte raised the final tranche of a $28 million round of funding. Its first product, the Afirma Thyroid FNA Analysis, utilizes a gene expression test to help reduce unnecessary surgeries as part of thyroid cancer diagnosis.

o Speculation Grows that Floating Barges Are Google Data Centers

San Francisco -- Speculation is growing that a pair of mysterious barges anchored in San Francisco and Portland, Maine are floating data centers owned by Menlo Park-based Google, Computerworld reported. The publication said that Google received a patent for floating data centers in 2009. Google has not commented on the barges, which are modular structures about 40 feet wide and 70-80 feet long. "This appears to be an offshore data center," Rob Enderle, an analyst at Enderle Group, told Computerworld. "You can use water for cooling and there are a number of creative ways to get energy. More likely these will be moved around to provide localized support or backup as needed."

o Senate Confirms Tom Wheeler as New FCC Chairman

Washington, DC -- The Senate has unanimously confirmed Tom Wheeler as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), nearly six months after President Obama nominated the managing director of investment firm Core Capital Partners for the role. Wheeler succeeds Julius Genachowski, who in March announced his plans to step down. Wheeler joined Core in 2005 after previously co-founding SmartBrief, an online targeted news service. He also has served as president of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), and has been an informal advisor to Obama on telecom policy issues. "Tom Wheeler will be a strong advocate for consumers and the public interest at a time when the FCC is facing decisions that will shape the future of our nation's telephone network and the wireless, broadband and video industries," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.
