o NVCA Reports Venture Capital Firms Raise $4.1 Billion in Third Quarter

Arlington, Va. -- U.S. venture capital firms raised $4.1 billion during the third quarter of 2013, an increase of 28% over the amount raised during the same quarter last year, according to a new survey released on Monday by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). The capital was committed to 56 separate funds, representing the highest number for any quarter in the previous 12 months, according to the survey. "The gradually improving IPO market, along with better quality exits on the M&A side, are signaling to limited partners that venture funds can still yield attractive returns,” said John Taylor, NVCA head of research, in an announcement. Fundraising during the most recent quarter was led by Boston-based Greylock Partners, which raised $1 billion and Silicon Valley-based Sequoia Capital, which raised $553 million. The Greylock fund is the first U.S. venture capital fund to raise over $1 billion this year.

o Lockheed To Scale Back Furloughs As Most DoD Employees Return to Work

Washington, D.C. -- In response to the Defense Department's announcement over the weekend calling most of its employees back to work, Lockheed Martin announced that it will cut the number of employees it is furloughing from 3,000 to 2,400. Despite the ongoing government shutdown, legislation signed by President Obama allowed Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to call most civilian Department of Defense workers back to work by deeming them necessary for the "morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness" of service members. Lockheed said on Friday that it would need to furlough employees who either work at closed government facilities, require a government inspection that can't be completed or have been impacted by a stop work order. "As a result of Secretary Hagel’s announcement that most of the nearly 400,000 civilian Department of Defense (DOD) employees have been deemed essential for national security, Lockheed Martin will reduce the number of employees who will be affected by government shutdown today," the company said in a statement. "The Department of Defense's decision will not eliminate the impact of the government shutdown on the company's employees and the business. The company will still have approximately 2,400 employees unable to work."
