o San Francisco-Based Koality Lands $1.8 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Koality, the San Francisco-based creator of a platform designed to help software developers test code, said it has raised $1.8 million in a round of seed funding, led by FF Angel, a seed-stage fund operated by Founders Fund. Webb Investment Network, Index Ventures, Felicis Ventures and UJ Ventures also participated, along with several individuals. Koality, which debuted earlier this month at TechCrunch Disrupt, offers a cloud-based software testing platform that lets engineers test their code in a production-like environment before it's shared with the development team.

o Report: Cupertino-Based Apple Buys Personal Assistant Service Cue

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple has acquired San Francisco-based Cue, developer of a smart assistant app, in a deal worth more than $40 million, TechCrunch reported. Cue, formerly known as Greplin, was backed by SV Angel, Sequoia Capital, Lerer Ventures and Index Ventures. The company's service, which has been shuttered, gave users an "overview" of their upcoming events by linking together related phone numbers, addresses, tickets, invitations, receipts and other relevant information. "We appreciate all of the support from you, our users, as Cue has grown over the last few years," the company wrote on its website. "However, the Cue service is no longer available." Cue said it has permanently deleted the data and personal information of users.

o Facebook, Maryland Partner on Cyberbullying Pilot Program

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Hoping to curb the growing problem of cyberbullying, Menlo Park-based Facebook has unveiled a first-in-its-kind pilot project in Maryland. The program, to be known as the Educator Escalation Channel, is designed to streamline the reporting of suspected cyberbullying occurrences on Facebook that can't be resolved through the company's normal reporting process or demand more immediate attention. For issues not resolved within 24 hours through standard methods, educators now will be able to contact a designated point person from their school system, who will directly communicate with the company to accelerate the process. "We can no longer brush off these episodes and we must reject a 'kids will be kids' mentality that ignores how to confront this troubling trend," said Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler. "I commend Facebook for working with us to give educators a more streamlined way to report possible instances of cyberbullying among their students."

Santa Clara, Calif. -- DataDirect Networks (DDN), a Santa Clara-based developer of data storage and processing tools, has named John Dorman as its interim president. He replaces Joe Cowan, who the company said has stepped down to "pursue other interests." Cowan will continue to serve on the company's board. Dorman, most recently the chairman, president and CEO of online banking services company Digital Insight, has served on DDN's board for the past five years. He previously was the senior vice president and general manager of global financial services at Oracle.
