o San Mateo-Based SolarCity to Acquire Zep Solar For $158 Million

San Mateo, Calif. -- San Mateo-based SolarCity, the large solar installation company in the U.S., announced on Wednesday that it will acquire San Rafael-based Zep Solar for $158 million in stock. Zep Solar is one of the main providers of residential photovoltaic module systems in the U.S., and has been one of SolarCity's primary suppliers. "Zep Solar's product allows each of our crews to install significantly more solar every day, and it looks better on the roof than any comparable product we've seen," said Tanguy Serra, SolarCity's executive vice president of operations. "By acquiring Zep Solar, we can deliver solar electricity at a lower cost than was previously possible."

o Mountain View-based MobileIron Raises $48 Million in Sixth Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- MobileIron, a Mountain View-base provider of security and management products for mobile apps, documents, and devices, has raised $48 million in its sixth round of venture capital, according to a new filing by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Founded in 2007, MobileIron reports its customers now include seven of the 10 top pharmaceutical companies, five of the 10 world's largest banks, eight of the 10 largest automotive manufacturers, three of the 5 largest retailers, four of the 5 largest aerospace and defense companies, and half of the 10 largest law firms. Investors in the company include Institutional Venture Partners, Foundation Capital, Norwest Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, and Storm Ventures.

o Comcast, NBCUniversal and Twitter Announce TV Viewing Partnership

San Francisco -- Comcast, NBCUniversal and Twitter announced on Wednesday a strategic partnership that will allow Twitter users to directly connect with their television. In the first step of the partnership, Comcast will provide a new feature called "See It" that will allow its Xfinity TV customers to instantly access TV shows, movies and sports directly from a Tweet. This service will launch in November. The companies also announced an advertising partnership with NBCUniversal using Twitter's Amplify program.

o Alameda-based PINC Solutions Raises $1 Million More in VC Deal

Alameda, Calif. -- PINC Solutions, a provider of technology for managing transportation and warehouse operations, has raised an additional $1 million in a venture capital deal, according to a new filing by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The investment is an expansion of the company's deal earlier this year, which raised $5.5 million, bringing the total raised in the round so far to around $6.5 million. Founded in 2004, PINC offers a system that tracks assets for customers in manufacturing, retail and transportation, and provides information over a web-based interface to users on site or at remote locations. PINC is backed by Horizon Ventures and Sutter Hill Ventures.

o Menlo Park-based Canaan Partners Leads $11 Million Deal for Sample6

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Canaan Partners, a Menlo Park-based venture capital firm, has led the $11 million second round of venture capital for Sample6, a Boston-based biotechnology company focused on food safety. Founded in 2009, Sample6 is developing a platform for engineering of bioparticles that target and "light up" specific unwanted bacteria. Its sensor technology detects low levels of pathogens with no laboratory required, according to the company, allowing for potential applications in food production, retailing, and healthcare. Canaan focuses on technology and healthcare businesses, and typically invests between $1 million to $20 million in a deal.

o San Francisco-based Thoma Bravo Acquires Empirix

San Francisco -- Empirix, a provider of network testing, monitoring and analytics products, has been acquired by Thoma Bravo, a Chicago- and San Francisco-based private equity firm, according to an announcement on Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1992, Empirix helps service providers, mobile operators and enterprises manage their networks and optimize business performance. The company's customer base consists of large communication service providers, mobile operators, banks, insurance and healthcare companies. According to Thoma Bravo, Empirix has achieved significant growth over the past five years, reporting 22% year-over-year revenue growth in 2012, partially driven by a significant increase in bookings from international Tier 1 mobile operators.
