San Jose -- Synaptics, a developer of human interface technologies, announced it has signed an agreement to acquire San Jose-based Validity Sensors, a provider of biometric fingerprint authentication technology, for up to $255 million. Synaptics is hoping to capitalize on the growing fingerprint sensing market with the acquisition. Validity's technology is used on smartphones, tablets and notebooks. "Biometrics and fingerprint sensing is poised for explosive growth as OEMs look to differentiate their products, and consumers demand greater security with seamless ease-of-use," Synaptics said in a press release.

o San Francisco-based Lookout Raises $55 Million in Strategic Investment

San Francisco -- Lookout, a San Francisco-based provider of security software for protecting against mobile threats, announced on Thursday it has raised $55 million in strategic financing in a deal led by Deutsche Telekom. Lookout was founded in 2007 by three mobile security researchers who met at the University of Southern California. The company says it currently protects devices used by 45 million people worldwide, and later this year will launch its product designed to protect businesses from mobile threats. Other investors in the new financing deal include Qualcomm, Greylock Partners, Mithril Capital Management, Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, and Khosla Ventures.

o San Francisco-Based Liftopia Raises $5 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Liftopia, a San Francisco-based online retailer of lift tickets and mountain resort activities, has raised $5 million in a new round of funding, according to a new filing by the company with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Founded in 2006 by former Hotwire.com co-workers Evan Reece and Ron Schneidermann, Liftopia has now raised nearly $8 million. The company works directly with more than 150 mountain resorts across North America, selling lift tickets and a variety of resort activities in advance, allowing consumers to save up to 80% off walk-up rates. Investors in Liftopia include Industry Ventures, ru-Net Holdings, Thayer Ventures, First Round Capital, Lowercase Capital, SK Ventures, and Xandex Investments.

o San Jose-Based Oclaro Sells Division for $88.6 Million

San Jose, Calif. -- Oclaro, a San Jose-based provider of optical communications technology, announced on Thursday that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its Amplifier and Micro-Optics business to II-VI Inc. for $88.6 million. II-VI will also hire 145 Oclaro employees, primarily located in Horseheads, NY, San Jose and Shanghai, China. Last year Oclaro's Amplifier and Micro-Optics business recorded $94 million in revenue.

o San Francisco-based Reesio Raises $1.4 Million of Venture Capital

San Francisco -- Reesio, a provider or real estate transaction data, has raised around $1.4 million, according to a new filing by the company with the Securities Exchange Commission. Competing with Zillow and Trulia, Reesio offers up-to-the-minute residential property sales data provided by agents multiple times per day, as they use Reesio's software to manage their deals. The company's products include document storage, sharing, e-signing, workflow management, and offer-making applications. Founded in 2012, Reesio is backed with investment from 500Startups, Digital Garage, and Microventures.

o SurveyMonkey Sells TrueSample To Five Peaks Capital

Palo Alto, Calif. -- SurveyMonkey, the Palo Alto-based online survey company, announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell TrueSample, an online data company, to a group of investors led by Five Peaks Capital Management. After the deal closes, TrueSample will be independently operated. Financial terms were not disclosed. SurveyMonkey acquired the TrueSample business in early 2012 from TPG Growth as part of a larger transaction.
