Previous backers Comcast Ventures, Cisco, Pitango Venture Capital, Benchmark Capital, Northbridge Venture Partners and Marker participated, along with two new investors -- an unspecified U.S. private equity fund and Russia's Rusnano. Thirty-seven states and Washington, DC will share in the settlement, which resulted from a Maryland-led investigation. "Given the many, often undetectable ways personal information can be collected and shared online, consumers need to be able to trust that their privacy preferences will be honored," said Doug Gansler, Maryland's attorney general. The charges alleged that Mountain View-based Google, for more than a year ending in early 2012, altered the coding on its DoubleClick advertising platform to circumvent default privacy settings on Safari that were supposed to automatically block third-party cookies. Besides the settlement amount, Google also will be required to alter its privacy practices. http://www.oag.state.md.us/Press/2013/111813a.html _____________________________________________ o Russian Team Wins PayPal Global Hackathon Competition San Jose, Calif. -- PayPal on Monday announced the $100,000 grand-prize winner of its Battle Hack Series, a global hackathon competition.
