o Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo Hires Katie Couric to Expand Online News

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Preparing to make a major push into online video news, Sunnyvale-based Yahoo on Monday hired longtime network news anchor and television host Katie Couric as its "global anchor." Beginning next year, Couric will help develop Yahoo's news coverage, which the company said will include reports on live world events and interviews with major newsmakers. "News is a definitive daily habit for our users -- and Katie will work with our talented editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism," said CEO Marissa Mayer. Couris, who previously spent five years as anchor of the CBS Evening News and 15 years as co-host of NBC's Today, also will continue to host her syndicated daytime talk show, Katie. "Joining Yahoo offers a tremendous opportunity to reach people all around the world in the way that they're using and consuming media today," said Couric.

o Mountain View-Based Coursera Raises $20 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Coursera, the Mountain View-based developer of an online education platform, said it has raised $20 million in a new tranche of funding, expanding its second round to $63 million. Participants included three universities that offer courses through the platform, as well as previous backers GSV Capital and Learn Capital. The company said it will use the financing to build out its content for students and expand its product and recruiting teams. "Over the past year, we've dedicated much of our effort to expanding Coursera's course offerings and channels of access to give our growing student population more opportunities to learn," said co-founder Daphne Koller. "Now… we're excited to see Coursera grow." Coursera's community currently encompasses more than 100 institutional partners, 700 professors and 5.5 million learners.

o Rate of IT Employment Growth Continues to Slow in October

Alexandria, Va. -- U.S. information technology employment grew for the 26th straight month in October, though the rate of growth continued to slow. The number of new IT jobs increased 0.04% to 4.51 million, according to the TechServe Alliance, a national trade association for the IT and engineering staffing industry. "While demand for IT professionals and engineers remains relatively robust, the rate of employment growth for both groups has continued to slow," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "The deceleration is no doubt attributable at least in part to the government shutdown for more than half of the month of October, which precipitated an atmosphere of uncertainty within the business community."
