o San Francisco-Based Jut Raises $20 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Jut, a stealthy San Francisco-based big data application startup, said it has raised $20 million in its second round of funding, led by Accel Partners. LightSpeed Venture Partners and Wing also participated. "It's now clear that open source big data is radically changing the way information infrastructure is architected for scale and cost," said Steve McCanne, the company's founder and CEO, "but the real opportunity lies in rethinking how enterprise applications are architected so they can make sense out of the massive volumes of big data." McCanne, the former co-founder and CTO of Riverbed Technology, launched his latest company in February. Jut said it will use the capital to expand its engineering team and bring the first version of its product to market.

o Google Barge in San Francisco to be "Temporary Technology Exhibit Space"

San Francisco -- The picture is becoming clearer on how Mountain View-based Google plans to use a mysterious barge currently floating in the San Francisco Bay. Citing documents submitted to the Port of San Francisco, The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that the 50-foot-tall, 250-foot-long structure will serve as a "temporary technology exhibit space," with a goal to "drive visitation to the waterfront." When completed, the barge will be topped by about a dozen large sails, and spend a month at a time at different spots around the Bay. Attempting to quiet a whirlwind of rumors about its plans for the vessel, Google on Wednesday issued a statement calling it an "interactive space where people can learn about new technology."

o SIA Bestows Highest Honor on Applied Materials Chairman Mike Splinter

Noyce Award. The organization annually presents the award annually to someone who has made "significant contributions to the U.S. semiconductor industry in technology or public policy." o LivjngSocial to Sell Korea's Ticket Monster to Rival Groupon

Washington, DC -- Two years after acquiring the company, LivingSocial said it will sell Korea-based Ticket Monster (TMON) to arch-rival Groupon for $260 million in cash and stock. The deal, which will include at least $100 million in cash, is expected to close in early 2014. LivingSocial said it received several "competitive" offers for the three-year-old business, which offers daily and instant deals, travel packages and events to more than 2 million members in Korea and Malaysia. "Since LivingSocial's acquisition of TMON in 2011, both operations have evolved to meet their specific market needs," said CEO Tim O'Shaughnessy. "Today, TMON, while a great company, does not match our strategic direction, given that over half its business is goods oriented." Washington, DC-based LivingSocial said it will use the proceeds to reinvest in its core business.
