o San Francisco-Based Loop Commerce Lands Investment from PayPal

San Francisco -- Loop Commerce, the San Francisco-based developer of a web-based platform for e-commerce gift giving, said on Wednesday it has landed a new investment from PayPal. The news comes a month after the company said it had raised more than $7 million in its first round of funding. Don Kingsborough, PayPal's vice president of global strategic development, will serve as an observer on the company's board. "Together with PayPal, we plan to further accelerate the capabilities of our platform and the roll-out of the Loop solution to retailers," said co-founder and CEO Roy Erez. The company's platform, which integrates into retailers' online stores, is designed to improve the process of buying for someone online. Gift givers select and pay for items to send, then have recipients complete the transactions by filling in information such as size, preferred color or shipping address.

San Jose, Calif. -- Tessera Technologies, a San Jose-based developer of semiconductor packaging and camera module technologies, on Wednesday named Thomas Lacey as its permanent CEO, after he was named interim CEO in May. In May, he succeeded Rick Hill, who returned to his role as non-executive chairman. "The board undertook a comprehensive CEO search, a process which included Tom as a candidate," said Hill. McLean, Va. -- Media giant Gannett on Wednesday announced plans to include condensed editions of USA Today inside 35 of its daily local publications. The goal, said the company, is to bolster the reach of its national publication while increasing local coverage. Gannett has been piloting the efforts in four markets -- Indianapolis; Rochester, N.Y.; Fort Myers, Fla.; and Appleton, Wis. -- since October. o Study: Consumer Interest in Wearable Fitness Devices Quadruples

Arlington, Va. -- Interest in wearable fitness devices, like heart rate monitors and activity trackers, has grown significantly over the past year, according to a new study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). A survey of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers found that 13% are now interested in purchasing a fitness device over the next 12 months, up from just 3% in 2012. The devices also tripled in ownership from a year ago, with users citing motivation, monitoring fitness goal progress and monitoring physical activity levels or intensity as their top three reasons for purchasing. "CEA projects that the market for dedicated wearable fitness devices like body monitors and pedometers will continue to expand for the foreseeable future as more consumers become aware of these devices and an array of new products enter the market," said Kevin Tillmann, a senior research analyst at the CEA.
