The company said it will use the proceeds to bolster its video streaming and analytics platform, as well as support expansion both domestically and internationally. Jay Fulcher, the CEO of Ooyala, called the investment a "reflection of the massive opportunity [Telstra] see[s] in the market." Telstra last year also led the fifth round of funding for the company, which now has raised $122 million since its inception. Customers include ESPN, Pac-12 Enterprises, Bloomberg, Telegraph Media Group, Telefonica, The North Face, Rolling Stone, Dell, Sephora and Yahoo Japan. http://www.ooyala.com http://www.ooyala.com/about/press/ooyala-receives-43-million-investment-telstra-accelerate-adoption-its-market-leading _____________________________________________ o Wireless Carriers Agree to Voluntarily Unlock Mobile Devices Washington, DC -- Bowing to consumer and regulatory pressure, five of the largest U.S. wireless carriers have agreed to a voluntary set of guidelines that will let consumers unlock their mobile devices, wireless association CTIA announced. The carriers -- AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless -- have committed to, among other things, clearly notify customers when their devices are eligible for unlocking and unlock devices within two days of a consumer request. "Unlocking" a phone involves disabling software that's designed to prevent consumers from using the device on the network of another carrier. "We believe this agreement will continue to foster the world-leading range of devices and offerings that Americans enjoy today," said Steve Largent, the president and CEO of CTIA. Carriers have pledged to implement at least half of the six principles within three months, and the remainder within a year. http://www.ctia.org/resource-library/press-releases/archive/unlocking-devices http://www.ctia.org/docs/default-source/fcc-filings/ctia-letter-on-unlocking.pdf (PDF of agreement) _____________________________________________ o Millbrae-Based Stem Names John Carrington as New CEO Millbrae, Calif. -- just days after announcing a new $15 million round of funding, Millbrae-based energy technology company Stem on Friday named John Carrington as its new CEO. Carrington most recently served as the CEO of MiaSole, and previously was the executive vice president of marketing and business development at First Solar. He succeeds Salim Khan, who will remain with the company until the end of the year. Founded in 2009, Stem is the developer of a data analytics and intelligent energy storage system that the company said lets businesses reduce their electricity expenses without changing day-to-day operations. The system features an autonomous decision engine that alternates between battery power and grid power to optimize energy costs. http://www.stem.com/ http://www.stem.com/archives/7955 _____________________________________________ o Report: Information Technology Job Growth Levels Off in November Alexandria, Va. -- U.S. information technology employment growth leveled off in November, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance, a national trade association for the IT and engineering staffing industry. The organization said that IT jobs grew just 0.07% last month to 4.52 million. "While IT employment has grown for 27 consecutive months with 23 of those months being successive all-time highs, the rate of growth has continued to decelerate over the past year," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "The forces that earlier in the year turbo-charged the growth rate in IT appear to have abated." On a year-over-year basis, IT employment has grown by 5.2% since Nov. 2012. http://www.techservealliance.org http://www.techservealliance.org/pressroom/documents/Indexrelease December2013.pdf (PDF) _____________________________________________ o "Green Monday" Online Sales Rise 10% to $1.4 Billion Reston, Va. -- U.S. consumers spent $1.4 billion online on Monday, a day that his been dubbed "Green Monday" by the retail industry, making it the third heaviest online spending day of this holiday season, according to new figures from comScore. Sales grew 10% from a year ago, and sales so far this holiday season are up 9% from corresponding days in 2012. "Online buying for the period since Thanksgiving has been very strong and indicates that e-commerce is on track to meet expectations," said Gian Fulgoni, the chairman of comScore. "While Green Monday saw a strong desktop spending total of $1.4 billion, its 10% year-over-year growth rate might at first seem somewhat underwhelming given the growth rates we've seen for other important days this season." But Fulgoni said the abbreviated calendar between Thanksgiving and Christmas this season appears to be "compelling shoppers to complete more of their online buying during the weekends." http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/12/Green_Monday _Jumps_10_Percent_to_14_Billion_in_Desktop_Sales_to_Rank_as_3rd_ Heaviest_Day_of_the_Holiday_SeasontoDate _____________________________________________ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Digital Entertainment World: Register Now and Save $200 Digital Entertainment World (DEW) is the best place to connect with content creators and owners, enabling technology providers, digital distributors and device manufacturers to create the infrastructure and technology partnerships necessary to monetize digital content.
