o San Francisco-Based AdRoll Acquires Y Combinator-Backed userfox

San Francisco -- AdRoll, the San Francisco-based developer of an online ad retargeting platform, said on Thursday it has acquired userfox, a Y Combinator-backed startup that sends and manages marketing messages tailored to different users. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2012 by Peter Clark and Cesar Alaniz, San Francisco-based userfox is the developer of an email retention service that sends over 2 million emails a month for a variety of brands. AdRoll said the acquisition will help advertisers on its platform gather and execute on customer data from sources such as CRMs, email lists and mobile IDs. Clark, the CEO of userfox, will lead AdRoll's product efforts to integrate new data sources and partner with email providers. The acquisition is AdRoll's second, following the company's purchase of data analytics startup Bitdeli in 2013.

o San Francisco-Based ServiceSource Acquires Scout Analytics

San Francisco -- ServiceSource, a San Francisco-based developer of tools designed to help clients manage recurring revenue, said it has acquired Issaquah, Wash.-based Scout Analytics, a provider of predictive analytics for subscription businesses. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ServiceSource said the acquisition extends its reach into new markets, while increasing its footprint to $14 billion under management. "Scout Analytics significantly expands our reach into the fast-growing SaaS market, while creating new opportunities in B2B subscriptions for information services and digital media," said Mike Smerklo, the chairman and CEO of ServiceSource.

o Report: Google Led Tech Firms in 2013 Lobbying Spending

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google spent just over $14 million on lobbying efforts in Washington last year, tops among tech firms, according to record filed with the Clerk of the House this week and reported by public interest group Consumer Watchdog.
The figure was actually down 15% from 2012, when the Mountain View-based company was the target of an antitrust investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Still, it beat second-place Microsoft by $3.6 million, with IBM, Menlo Park-based Facebook and Redwood Shores-based Oracle rounding out the top five. o AOL to Acquire Content Personalization Company Gravity

Santa Monica, Calif. -- AOL said on Thursday it will pay $90.7 million to acquire Gravity, a Santa Monica-based developer of "interest graphs" that let publishers personalize content based on individuals' interests, preferences and habits. Under the deal, expected to close later this quarter, AOL will pay $83 million up front, as well as an additional $7.7 million over the next two years. Upon closing, the Gravity product and team will report to Luke Beatty, the head of product for AOL's Brand Group. AOL said it plans to integrate the company's technology to create more relevant content for individual consumers, advertisers and publisher partners. "The web is moving to the era of personal, and a personal web filter will reshape how consumers get information and services," said Tim Armstrong, the chairman and CEO of AOL. "Gravity is joining AOL to lead the personalization transformation of AOL's brands and platform partners."

Software Developer Tops U.S. News "Best Jobs of 2014" List

Washington, DC -- U.S. News & World Report on Thursday released its "Best Jobs of 2014" rankings, which for the first time ever included a No. 1-ranked job that wasn't in the healthcare sector. Software developer jumped six slots from last year to claim the top spot, with the publication citing a combination of excellent job prospects, faster than average job growth, low unemployment rate and a good salary. Despite losing the top spot, health care jobs still dominate the overall rankings, which examined 100 jobs in category-specific lists.
