o Mountain View-Based Google to Sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo

Mountain View, Calif. -- Less than two years after paying $12.5 billion to acquire Illinois-based handset-maker Motorola Mobility, Mountain View-based Google said it plans to sell the company to Lenovo for just $2.9 billion. Google originally bought the company with an eye on producing its own smartphones -- a notion that CEO Larry Page said no longer seems feasible. "The smartphone market is super competitive, and to thrive it helps to be all-in when it comes to making mobile devices," Page wrote in a blog post. "It's why we believe that Motorola will be better served by Lenovo." Lenovo said the acquisition will significantly strengthen its position in the smartphone market, while boosting its presence in North America and Latin America. Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosures.

o San Francisco-Based Zynga Cuts 15% of Staff; Announces Acquisition

San Francisco -- Zynga, the San Francisco-based social games developer, said on Thursday it will cut 15% of its staff, or 314 employees, as part of plan to decrease costs and improve efficiency. "When we reviewed the support areas and looked at what was an appropriate size to have agile, dedicated teams, we decided to redeploy and right size against our best opportunities for growth," wrote CEO Don Mattrick in a blog post. "We don't take these decisions lightly but we believe these actions will allow us to create a clearer, faster path to win." The company also said it will pay approximately $527 in cash and stock to acquire U.K.-based mobile game and technology developer NaturalMotion. Mattrick said the deal "expands Zynga's creative pipeline, accelerates our mobile growth and brings next-generation technology and tools to Zynga that will fast-track our ability to deliver consumers more hit games." NaturalMotion also has offices in San Francisco.

o Survey: Confidence of Silicon Valley VCs Highest Since 2007

San Francisco -- The confidence of Bay Area venture capitalists is now at its highest level since 2007, according to the newly released fourth quarter Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index. The index, produced by University of San Francisco professor Mark Cannice, registered a 3.94 out of 5, up slightly from a quarter ago. It now has improved in each of the past six quarters. "Good performing tech IPOs brighten the prospects for all young tech companies, and I am optimistic that 2014 will be a strong year," said Sandy Miller of Institutional Venture Partners. Added Tim Draper of DFJ, "Venture capital and entrepreneurship have gone through a very difficult decade and things are finally looking up." Jon Soberg of Blumberg Capital, meanwhile, cautioned that while he's optimistic about the next 6-18 months, "I think we may see some slowdown in the public markets that could impact the overall environment."
