"Hale Global has decided which Patch employees will receive an offer of employment to move forward in accordance with their vision for Patch and which will not," said COO Leigh Zarell in a morning conference call to affected employees, published by the blog Romenesko. "Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated and you will no longer have a role at Patch and today will be your last day of employment with the company." The new owner said recently it plans to re-launch Patch as "an efficient platform that allows citizens and businesses to create and share locally-themed news and content." AOL still owns an unspecified minority stake. Patch had been a particular focus for AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, who co-founded the news service in 2007 in Connecticut. AOL paid approximately $7 million to acquire the company in 2009, and currently operates more than 900 Patch sites. The organization said it now will target a range of intellectual property violations on behalf of both software and content publishers as part of its newly formed Intellectual Property Protection (IPP) division. New on its radar will be activities that can adversely affect a company's brand, intellectual property or reputation, such as counterfeiting, fraud, unauthorized access and fraudulent use of domain names.
