o Menlo Park-Based Origami Logic Raises $15 Million in Second Round

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Origami Logic, a Menlo Park-based developer of marketing intelligence tools, said on Wednesday it has raised $15 million in its second round of funding, led by Jafco Ventures. Previous backers Accel Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners also participated in the round, which raised the company's total funding to $24.3 million. The company said it will use the funds to bolster its engineering, sales and marketing efforts. Origami's platform is designed to help brands make more informed marketing decisions by collecting and organizing disparate marketing data. Jeb Miller, a general partner at Jafco Ventures, will join the company's board of directors.

o Belmont-Based PowerVision Raises $20 Million in Fourth Round

Belmont, Calif. -- PowerVision, a Belmont-based developer of intraocular lens technology used during cataract surgery, said it has raised $20 million in the initial tranche of its fourth round of funding. Participants included previous backers Venrock, Johnson & Johnson Development, Medtronic, Advanced Technology Ventures, Lexington Capital and Frazier Healthcare Ventures. The company also said it plans to raise up to an additional $10 million as part of the round, hoping to complete late-stage clinical studies that could give it regulatory clearance in Europe by next year. PowerVision's fluid-controlled accommodating intraocular lens technology is designed to help patients with certain lens implants restore their ability to accommodate -- dynamically adjust focus to see at near and far distances, as well as points in between.

The company, which also has other offices in New York and London, will officially open the new location Feb. 3. Ott Kaukver, Twilio's vice president of engineering, will oversee the company's R&D team out of the office, which can accommodate 60 employees. o Reports: Patch Lays Off Two-Thirds of Staff Following Sale

New York -- Just days after its sale to turnaround specialist Hale Global, Patch, the hyperlocal news network formerly owned by AOL, on Wednesday laid off about two-thirds of its staff, according to published reports. "Hale Global has decided which Patch employees will receive an offer of employment to move forward in accordance with their vision for Patch and which will not," said COO Leigh Zarell in a morning conference call to affected employees, published by the blog Romenesko. "Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated and you will no longer have a role at Patch and today will be your last day of employment with the company." The new owner said recently it plans to re-launch Patch as "an efficient platform that allows citizens and businesses to create and share locally-themed news and content." AOL still owns an unspecified minority stake. Patch had been a particular focus for AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, who co-founded the news service in 2007 in Connecticut. AOL paid approximately $7 million to acquire the company in 2009, and currently operates more than 900 Patch sites. The project, however, has failed to live up to expectations, and began weighing heavily on AOL's financial performance.

o SIIA to Expand Enforcement Efforts Beyond Piracy

Washington, DC -- After two decades of aggressive anti-piracy efforts, the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA), a trade association for the software and digital content industries, on Wednesday unveiled plans to significantly expand its enforcement efforts. The organization said it now will target a range of intellectual property violations on behalf of both software and content publishers as part of its newly formed Intellectual Property Protection (IPP) division. New on its radar will be activities that can adversely affect a company's brand, intellectual property or reputation, such as counterfeiting, fraud, unauthorized access and fraudulent use of domain names. "Our dramatically expanded program recognizes that companies’ intellectual property needs no longer begin and end with piracy," said Keith Kupferschmid, the SIIA's general counsel and senior vice president of intellectual property. "The move to the cloud is significantly changing the nature of IP violations. While software and content piracy remains commonplace, new infractions -- like illegal access to software and content in the cloud and misuse of popular brands online to defraud consumers -- are becoming far more prevalent."
