All told, 44% of online U.S. consumers now own tablets such as the iPad and Kindle Fire, up from 38% a year ago. What's more, nearly three in four plan to purchase a tablet sometime in the future. Tablets with smaller screens -- 7-8 inches -- are the fastest-growing segment, while owners of the devices now spent an average of $8.89 a month in apps.
