o Verint to Acquire Sunnyvale-Based Kana Software for $514 Million

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Verint Systems, a New York-based developer of tools that let users capture, analyze and act on large volumes of data, said on Monday it will pay approximately $514 million in cash to acquire Sunnyvale-based Kana Software, a developer of customer service technology, from owner Accel-KKR. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of April. "Our complementary solutions represent a comprehensive offering to help optimize customer engagement," said Dan Bodner, the CEO of Verint. The combined company will offer products designed to help clients capture and manage cross-functional information around customer interactions, business processes and workforce performance. Kana will add more than 900 customers to Verint's current roster of more than 10,000.

o Coupons.com Acquires Mountain View-Based Startup Yub

Mountain View, Calif. -- Coupons.com, a Mountain View-based provider of digital couponing services, said on Monday it has acquired fellow Mountain View-based technology company Yub, whose platform lets consumers link digital offers to payment cards for instant savings when they use those cards for in-store purchases. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Coupons.com said it plans to use its resources to bolster consumer adoption of the company's platform, which also lets merchants track offers from online clicks to offline purchases. Yub was born out of alternative online payment platform TrialPay. Its backers include Visa, Atomico, Battery Ventures, DAG Ventures, DFJ Growth, Greylock Partners, Index Ventures, T. Rowe Price and QuestMark Partners.

o Santa Clara-Based Palo Alto Networks Acquires Morta Security

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Palo Alto Networks, a Santa Clara-based developer of cybersecurity tools designed to protect enterprise, government, and service provider networks from attacks, said on Monday it has acquired Morta Security, a Palo Alto-based cybersecurity firm that has been operating in stealth mode since 2012. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Palo Alto said the acquisition will bolster its platform by adding capabilities that can expedite the detection of new attack variations. "The Morta team brings additional valuable threat intelligence experience and capabilities to Palo Alto Networks," said Mark McLaughlin, the CEO of Palo Alto Networks.

o Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Grow for Ninth Straight Month

Washington, DC -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $27.2 billion in November, up 6.8% from the prior year and 0.6% over the previous month, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). It marked the industry's ninth straight month of increasing sales, led largely by the Americas. "Buoyed by sustained growth in the Americas and Asia Pacific and a recent rebound in Europe and Japan, the global semiconductor industry has shown increasing strength in 2013 and is on pace for record revenue," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO of the SIA.

o Carlyle Hires Former FCC Commissioner Julius Genachowski

Washington, DC -- Julius Genachowski, who last year stepped down as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), on Monday joined alternative asset giant The Carlyle Group as managing director and partner of its U.S. Buyout team. Genachowski, who headed the FCC for four years, will focus on investments in technology, media and telecom, including Internet and mobile. During his time at the FCC, Genachowski grappled with a number of contentious issues involving broadband policy and media consolidation. "It's an exciting time in the space, with an ongoing wave of innovation creating significant opportunities for investment," said Genachowski. He left the FCC last May, later to be succeeded by Tom Wheeler, and has since taught a joint class at Harvard's Business and Law Schools and served as a senior fellow at the Aspen Institute.

(Sunnyvale, Calif.) Sunnyvale-based angel investment group Sand Hill Angels said it made 32 investments in 2013 totaling more than $3.5 million, about 30% more than the prior year.
