Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Good Technology, a Sunnyvale-based developer of enterprise mobility tools that allow employees to connect to corporate networks using their personal mobile devices, said it will acquire Maryland-based BoxTone, developer of a platform used by clients to manage mobile devices and apps. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in the next two months, were not disclosed. The company also announced has announced a new cloud-based messaging platform and mobile service management (MSM) offering, as well as new partnerships.

o WSJ: Los Gatos-Based Netflix to Pay Comcast for Smoother Streaming

Los Gatos, Calif. -- Netflix will pay cable giant Comcast to ensure that its subscribers are able to more smoothly stream the company's movies and TV shows, The Wall Street Journal reported. Los Gatos-based Netflix reportedly will gain direct access to Comcast's broadband network, but said in a statement that it will receive "no preferential network treatment." Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The news comes just 10 days after Comcast announced plans to acquire Time Warner Cable. If the deal is approved, the combined company will provide broadband access to 32 million U.S. households.

o Santa Clara-Based Rovi to Acquire Veveo for $62 Million

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Rovi, a Santa Clara-based developer of program search and navigation technology, said on Monday it will pay $62 million to acquire Massachusetts-based Veveo, a developer of entertainment discovery tools. The value of the deal, which is expected to close shortly, could rise by as much as $7 million, based on Veveo's future performance. The acquisition combines Rovi’s search and recommendation engine with Veveo's personalization and contextual search tools. "The Veveo acquisition will deepen Rovi’s cloud-based search and recommendation capabilities, enhance our entertainment metadata and guide solutions with next-generation semantic capabilities, and help us grow our advertising and analytics offerings," said Tom Carson, the president and CEO of Rovi.

o San Francisco-Based Dolby to Acquire Doremi Labs

San Francisco -- Dolby Laboratories, the San Francisco-based audio technology company, said on Monday it will pay $92.5 million in cash to acquire Burbank-based Doremi Labs, a maker of digital cinema video playback systems. The value of the deal, expected to close by the end of 2014, could rise by as much as $20 million, based on Doremi's performance over the next four years. "Dolby and Doremi Labs have complementary technology expertise and solutions," said Kevin Yeaman, the president and CEO of Dolby. "Together we'll be able to advance the pace of innovation and create the kind of cinematic experiences that drive movie attendance for our exhibitor partners." Launched in 1985, Doremi Labs is a developer of digital servers and format converters for the broadcast, postproduction and professional audio/visual markets. The company's technology is installed in more than 47,000 screens.

o Germany's Utimaco Opens North American Headquarters in Palo Alto

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Utimaco, a German maker of hardware-based security tools, said on Monday it has opened North American headquarters in Palo Alto. The company, which separated from the Sophos group in October, said the move will further strengthen its position in the U.S. market, where it has generated 200% year-over-year growth. Utimaco's hardware security modules (HSM) are most commonly used in the tamper-proof preparation and storage of cryptographic keys. "HSM technology has been dominant in the banking and payment industry for years. Now we're seeing overwhelming demand across a number of additional U.S. industries," said CEO Malte Pollmann. "Our expanded presence in the Bay Area allows for faster delivery, service and support." Pollmann said the company plans to double its U.S. head count in 2014.
