o Solum Raises $4.2M, Sells Business and Changes Name to Granular

San Francisco -- Solum, a San Francisco-based developer of software designed to help farmers become more efficient and make better business decisions, said it has raised $4.2 million in a new round of funding, sold its soil science business and changed its name to Granular Inc. Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures took part in the round, which the company will use to expand its engineering team in San Francisco and sales and customer support teams across the U.S. The company also has sold its soil science business to Monsanto for an undisclosed sum. It will now be operated by Monstanto's subsidiary, The Climate Corporation. "We were fortunate to develop two great business lines at Solum: an advanced soil science business based in Iowa and a cloud software and analytics business here in San Francisco,” said CEO Sid Gorham. "The Climate Corporation is the right partner to bring our soil science innovations to their full commercial potential. For our part, we're excited about building out Granular as a cloud software provider to help large farming businesses become more efficient, profitable and sustainable."

o Facebook's Acquisition of WhatsApp Unlikely to Face Regulatory Scrutiny

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Facebook's newly announced $19 billion acquisition of Mountain View-based WhatsApp isn't likely to face much antitrust scrutiny in Washington, Politico reported. The Menlo Park-based social networking giant earlier this week unveiled plans to acquire WhatsApp, developer of a mobile messaging app that allows its approximately 450 million monthly users to exchange messages without having to pay for texting. Antitrust experts say the deal is unlikely to draw the ire of regulators since the service already has plenty of competition, led by traditional text messaging. "This is an industry or sector that's been marked by remarkable technological change and new entrants," said Seth Bloom, a former antitrust counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, told Politico. "For that reason, it's hard to imagine that you can have durable monopolies. It's easy for new entrants to come in and knock off players."

o Santa Clara-Based Marvell Technology Names Michael Rashkin as CFO

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Marvell Technology Group, a Santa Clara-based developer of storage, communications and consumer silicon products, on Friday named Michael Rashkin as its permanent CFO, after he had held the role on an interim basis since December. Rashkin has been with the company since 1999, serving in roles that have included vice president of tax, vice president of strategic development and president of the Marvell Charitable Fund. He also briefly served as interim CFO in late 2007 and early 2008. "He is a well-known and well-liked executive within Marvell and… is the best choice for all our stakeholders," said CEO Sehat Sutardja. The move comes a month after Pantas Sutardja resigned as Marvell's CTO, and the company promoted Zining Wu to fill the void.
