o Tribune Completes $170 Million Deal for Emeryville-Based Gracenote

Emeryville, Calif. -- Tribune, the Chicago-based media giant, said on Monday it has completed its $170 million acquisition of Emeryville-based Gracenote from Sony Corporation of America. The deal was first announced in December. Gracenote maintains a database containing data on more than 180 million music tracks, which is then used to power streaming music services such as iTunes. "With the addition of Gracenote, we will expand our metadata capabilities by extending the business into new areas of music and automotive," said Peter Liguori, the president and CEO of Tribune. Gracenote will continue to operate from its headquarters in Emeryville.

o Sunnyvale-Based Mellanox Technologies Launches Investment Arm

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Mellanox Technologies, a Sunnyvale-based supplier of interconnect products for data center servers and storage systems, said on Monday it has launched a new investment arm called Mellanox Capital. The business will make investments in companies focused on storage, compute, virtualization, cloud infrastructure, big data, enterprise app platforms and embedded technologies. Eyal Waldman, the president and CEO of Mellanox, said the new arm will "enhance our relationships with entrepreneurs, opening doors to new markets, customers, alliances, co-investors and emerging technologies." Nimrod Gindi will serve as managing director of Mellanox Capital.

o Oakland-Based CashBet Raises $1.7 Million in Angel Round

Oakland -- CashBet, the Oakland-based developer of a platform enabling real-money online gambling in social and mobile games, said on Monday it has raised $1.7 million in a new round of angel funding. Participants included Fred Hsu and other prominent angel investors. "We'll continue to focus on expanding the feature set and capabilities of our platform," said co-founder and CEO Mike Reaves. Founded in 2012, CashBet makes software that helps developers enter the online gambling market with licensing, compliance, player verification and banking features.

o Fremont-Based Synnex Completes Initial Close of IBM CRM Acquisition

Fremont, Calif. -- Synnex, a Fremont-based provider of business process services, said on Monday it has completed the initial close of its $505 million acquisition of IBM's customer relationship management (CRM) business. The deal, first announced in September, included $430 million in cash and $75 million in stock. Synnex said it will combine the business with its New York-based Concentrix unit, which will have approximately 43,000 employees. "We are excited about the client base coming over from IBM," said Kevin Murai, the president and CEO of Synnex. "After the initial integration and planned expiration of certain lower margin contracts, we expect to grow revenue and earnings for the combined business."

o Budweiser "Puppy Love" Ad Wins USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter

McLean, Va. -- Budweiser's ad about a puppy and the Clydesdale horse it loves won the highest-rated ad in Sunday's Super Bowl, according to USA Today's 26th annual Super Bowl Ad Meter, which took the pulse of 6,272 online panelists. The spot, "Puppy Love" scored 8.29 out of 10 to top the field, followed by Doritos' "Cowboy Kid" (7.58) and Budweiser's "Hero's Welcome" (7.21). All told, the Fox broadcast featured nearly 50 commercials, which cost advertisers $4 million per 30-second ad. o Worldwide Chip Sales Surpass $300 Billion for First Time Ever in 2013

Washington, DC -- Worldwide semiconductor sales reached a record $305.6 billion in 2013, up nearly 5% from the previous year, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The figure narrowly exceeded expectations from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization's industry forecast. Memory was the fastest growing segment, with sales increasing 17.6% from 2012. "The global semiconductor industry exceeded $300 billion in sales for the first time ever in 2013, spurred by consistent, steady growth across nearly all regions and product categories," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO of the SIA. "The industry finished the year on a strong note with its best December on record, indicating that recent momentum is likely to carry over into 2014."

(Santa Clara, Calif.) Santa Clara-based Violin Memory, a developer of memory-based storage technology, on Monday named Kevin DeNuccio as its new president and CEO. DeNuccio, most recently the co-founder and manager of Wild West Capital, an angel investing, management and technology consulting firm, succeeds Howard Bain III, who was serving as interim CEO. Bain will remain chairman. DeNuccio also has been the CEO of Metaswitch Networks and Redback Networks.
