Redmond, Wash. -- Software giant Microsoft didn't have to look far to find its new leader, on Tuesday promoting Satya Nadella to the role of CEO -- just the third in company history after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Nadella has been with the company since 1992, most recently serving as the executive vice president of its cloud and enterprise group. "His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth," said Gates, who also announced he is stepping down as chairman to take on a more hands-on role as technology advisor. John Thompson, the board's lead independent director, will assume the role of chairman. Ballmer announced in August that he would retire once a successor was named.
