o Fairchild Semiconductor Loses Patent Case; Ordered to Pay $105 Million

San Jose, Calif. -- Fairchild Semiconductor, a San Jose-based chipmaker, said on Wednesday it plans to challenge a federal court ruling in a patent infringement case that awarded $105 million to Power Integrations. The ruling, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, found that the company willfully infringed on two U.S. patents. Products in the case include chips used in switch-mode power supplies made by the company’s System General subsidiary. In a previous patent infringement case between the two companies, a jury awarded Power Integrations $34 million in damages in 2006. Virtually all of that award was eventually thrown out by a 2013 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Washington, DC -- Cable giant Comcast said it will indefinitely continue its program providing low-cost broadband service to needy families. The program, known as Internet Essentials program, had been scheduled to expire later this year after initially launching in 2011. The company has connected an estimated 1.2 million individuals over the first 2 1/2 years of the program. Households can participate if they have at least one child eligible for the National School Lunch Program in markets where the company offers Internet service.
