Under the deal, first announced in January, Sysorex paid $10 million in cash and $10 million in stock, and could pay up to $10 million more based on AirPatrol's future performance. AirPatrol has four U.S. and 11 foreign patent applications pending for its location, security and context awareness systems that can detect smartphones, tablets, laptops and other mobile devices. All told, venture capitalists invested $9.5 billion during the quarter, up 12% from the prior quarter and 36% from the same quarter in 2013. Despite an overall drop in seed- and early-stage financing numbers, expansion-stage dollars invested nose 34% from the fourth quarter. "This was to be expected when you consider the domination by seed and early stage deals in 2012 and 2013," said Bobby Franklin, president and CEO of the NVCA. "Because these companies are now moving to the next stage of their maturing process, the investment rounds tend to be bigger, which explains why the numbers are trending toward the later stages of the investment calendar.
