Menlo Park, Calif. -- Synack, a Menlo Park-based developer of vulnerability and security testing technology, said on Thursday it has landed $7.5 million in its first round of funding, led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). New investor Google Ventures and previous backers Greylock Partners, Allegis Capital and Derek Smith, the CEO of Shape Security, also participated. Synack, which now has raised more than $9 million since its inception, will use the latest funds to further develop its platform and expand its team. Led by former senior National Security Agency analysts, Synack has developed a platform that lets users engage an on-demand community of trusted security researchers. "The only way to defend against the influx of sophisticated cyber attacks is to combine advanced technology with human interaction," said CEO Jay Kaplan.

Menlo Park, Calif. -- GI Partners, a middle market private equity firm based in Menlo Park, said on Thursday it has closed a new $2 billion investment fund, to be known as GI Partners Fund IV. The fund will continue the firm's strategy of investing in North American company in several sectors, including IT infrastructure and services. "This new fund enables us to continue to pursue attractive investment opportunities and seek to partner with high quality management teams to build market leading companies," the firm said in a statement. GI now has managed $6 billion across four private equity funds since its inception in 2001. Managing directors for the latest fund include Howard Park, Hoon Cho, Alexander Fraser and Greg VandenBosch.

o DataXu Acquires San Francisco-Based JasperLabs

San Francisco -- DataXu, a Boston-based developer of programmatic marketing software for brands and agencies, said on Thursday it has acquired San Francisco-based JasperLabs, a developer of software that allows digital marketers to change the creative elements of an ad in real time. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition comes after the two companies have partnered for more than a year, jointly delivering campaigns for customers such as Essence Digital and BSSP. Mike Baker, the CEO of DataXu, said his company will now be able to offer "an integrated platform for engaging the right consumer at the right time with personally relevant content."

o Google Leads Top Tech and Telecom Firms in Q1 Lobbying Spending

Mountain View, Calif. -- Google spent $3.8 million lobbying federal lawmakers and regulators during the first quarter, making it the top spender among 15 technology and telecommunications companies analyzed by public interest group Consumer Watchdog, based on lobbying disclosure forms. The Mountain View-based search giant's figure was 14% hire than the same period a year ago. Rival Microsoft, which until recently had outspent Google, spent $2.1 million, an 18% decrease. Comcast, which is seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Justice Department for its $45.2 billion acquisition of Time Warner Cable, spent $3.1 million during the period. Washington, DC -- Chipmaker Intel tops the Environmental Protection Agency's newly released list of the nation's top 100 users of "green" energy.
