The agreement comes roughly a month before a trial was scheduled to begin. The class-action suit was filed in 2011 on behalf of approximately 64,000 employees of the companies. The plaintiffs were seeking damages of $3 billion, which potentially could've been tripled. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/24/us-apple-google-lawsuit-exclusive-idUSBREA3N28Z20140424 _____________________________________________ o SVForum Selects 30 Startups for Launch: Silicon Valley Event San Jose, Calif. -- SVForum, a San Jose-based nonprofit focused on innovation and entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley, on Friday announced the 30 companies selected for its Launch: Silicon Valley event, scheduled for May 20 at Microsoft's Mountain View campus. Approximately a fourth of those attending (40,828) were from outside the U.S. The event took place Jan. 7-10. The index measures key indicators of economic- and education-related STEM activity in the U.S. over time. All told, there are now 16.8 million STEM workers, up from 12.8 million at the turn of the century, yet high school student interest levels in STEM fell between 2009-2013 and are now slightly below where they were in 2000. In addition, gender and ethnic gaps among students interested in STEM remain wide. "Science, technology, engineering and math form the foundation of the global innovation economy," said William Swanson, the chairman of Raytheon. "Yet, as the STEM Index suggests, if educational trends continue, fewer professionals will be available to deliver growth in these areas."
