o Brendan Eich Steps Down as CEO of Mountain View-Based Mozilla

Mountain View, Calif. -- Mozilla, the Mountain View-based software community best known for its Firefox web browser, said on Thursday that Brendan Eich has stepped down as its CEO, just 10 days after being promoted to the role amid a firestorm of controversy. The initial move created an uproar, since Eich had been a supporter of California's Proposition 8, an antigay-marriage ballot measure. "We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves," wrote Mitchell Baker, the organization's executive chair. "We didn’t act like you'd expect Mozilla to act. We didn't move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We're sorry. We must do better." Baker said plans for a new leader are still being discussed. "We want to be open about where we are in deciding the future of the organization and will have more information next week," wrote Baker.

o Steve Case to Invest $1M in 10 Tech Startups Appearing at Google Event

Mountain View, Calif. -- Steve Case, chairman and CEO of Revolution and co-founder of AOL, said he spontaneously decided to invest $100,000 each in 10 companies that took part in Wednesday's first-ever Google for Entrepreneurs Demo Day in Mountain View. The event featured 10 startups from Google's seven-city North American Tech Hub Network to pitch their companies to more than 60 potential investors. "I've long known that great startups can be found everywhere, and not just in Silicon Valley," said Case at the event. "I was so inspired by the consistent quality of each of the pitches that I made an on-the-spot decision to support each company." The 10 companies include: North Carolina-based Automated Insights and Windsor Circle, Minnesota-based Docalytics and Kidizen, Colorado-based GoSpotCheck, Tennessee-based InvisionHeart, Michigan-based iRule, Illinois-based MarkITx and WeDeliver and Canada-based MOJIO. o Palo Alto-Based Jaunt Raises $6.8 Million for Virtual Reality Tech

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Jaunt, a Palo Alto-based startup building hardware, software, tools and applications to enable cinematic virtual reality, said on Thursday it has raised $6.8 million in a new round of funding. Participants included Redpoint Ventures, Peter Gotcher, Blake Krikorian, SV Angel and British Sky Broadcasting. Jaunt's technology uses advanced computational photography to enable immersive virtual reality to be applied to live-action content. "We want to broaden the VR experience to mainstream entertainment." As a part of the funding round, Tim Haley, partner at Redpoint Ventures; Peter Gotcher, chairman of Dolby and founder of DigiDesign; and Stuart Murphy, director of entertainment at Sky, will join the company's board of directors.
