o Menlo Park-Based QBotix Raises $12 Million in Second Round

Menlo Park, Calif. -- QBotix, a Menlo Park-based developer of mobile robots used in the operation and management of solar power plants, said it has raised $12 million in its second round of funding. Participants included E.ON and Iberdrola, as well as previous backers New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Firelake Capital Management and Draper Nexus. QBotix said it will use the funds to grow its team, accelerate manufacturing and expand into new markets. The company said its autonomous robots are designed to replace hundreds of conventional electromechanical components and reduce structural material requirements. Systems are currently installed in the U.S. and Japan, with others under development in the U.S., Europe, Mexico and Australia.

o San Francisco-Based Sunrun Raises $150 Million in Funding

San Francisco -- Sunrun, a San Francisco-based provider of home solar services, said it has raised $150 million in new round of funding, believed to be the largest private equity raise announced to date for a private residential solar company in the U.S. An unnamed "public institutional investor" led the round with a $100 million investment, the company said. The company will use the funds to broaden its reach to consumers and continue developing its tools and technologies. Sunrun's service allows homeowners to go solar without high upfront costs. The company installs, owns and maintains the solar panels on a homeowner's roof, while customers pay just for the electricity. "We are well capitalized for the next phase of our business, which continues to experience impressive growth quarter over quarter," said Edward Fenster, the chairman of Sunrun.

Silicon Image has named Steven Robertson, who currently serves as its vice president of finance, to serve as interim CFO, while it searches for a permanent replacement. o VC Survey: Silicon Valley Companies See Substantial Valuation Increases

Mountain View, Calif. -- Silicon Valley companies raising venture capital last quarter saw substantial valuation increases, according to a new survey by Fenwick & West. During the first quarter, up rounds -- in which a company's price per share increased since its prior financing round -- exceeded down rounds 76% to 8%, with 16% flat. It marked the largest difference between up and down rounds (68%) since the second quarter of 2007. In addition, share prices increased an average of 85%. "At the big picture level, it was a very strong quarter for the venture environment, with venture investment, IPOs and fundraising all hitting multi-year highs," said Michael Patrick, a partner in the corporate group of Fenwick & West and co-author of the survey. "But public technology companies have had a difficult time recently, and it remains to be seen if this trend will continue, and if so what the effect will be on the venture environment." Complete survey results are available at the link below.
