Mountain View, Calif. – Intuit, the Mountain View-based publisher of business and financial management software, said on Tuesday it will pay approximately $360 million to acquire Palo Alto-based Check, a developer of mobile bill pay services. Intuit said the deal, expected to close during its fourth fiscal quarter, will help accelerate its ability to offer bill pay across small business and personal finance products. Check currently boasts more than 10 million registered users of its mobile app, which automates and consolidates the bill pay process. Guy Goldstein, Check's co-founder and CEO, will serve as a vice president at Intuit.

o Palo Alto-Based DoorDash Raises $17.3 Million in First Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- DoorDash, the Palo Alto-based developer of a web- and app-based food delivery service in the Bay Area, said it has raised $17.3 million in its first round of funding, led by Sequoia Capital. Other participants included previous backers Khosla Ventures, Charles River Ventures and Pejman Mar Ventures, along with Ted Zagat of Zagat Survey. DoorDash was founded in early 2013 by four Stanford students with work experience at Facebook, Square, Vevo and eBay. The company, which currently operates in the South Bay and San Jose areas, said it eventually plans to expand its services to small businesses other than restaurants. "We will use the funding to grow out the team, continue developing our dispatch technology and pursue our national rollout," the company said.

o San Mateo-Based Apixio Raises $13.5 Million in Third Round
 
San Mateo, Calif. – Apixio, a San Mateo-based developer of big data analytics for the healthcare industry, said on Tuesday it has raised $13.5 million in its third round of funding, led by Bain Capital Ventures. Several Silicon Valley angel investors also participated. "The proceeds will be used to ramp up our sales and operations in support of the strong growth we are experiencing in our risk adjustment business," said co-founder and CEO Shawn Dastmalchi. "We also intend to further develop our big data technology and to build on our vision to provide analytic solutions that power value-based care." Apixio's technology is designed to help health plans and large provider groups more accurately and efficiently determine member risk scores and receive appropriate value-based reimbursement.

San Francisco – Blurb, the San Francisco-based developer of an indie book and magazine publishing platform, said on Tuesday it has hired several former team members of Graphicly, developer of an ebook creation platform for illustrated books, such as comics, graphic novels and children's books. Those hired include Graphicly co-founder Micah Baldwin. Blurb said the talent acquisition will help it significantly accelerate its development of ebook and graphic publishing. “This acquisition of incredibly relevant talent will help us advance our vision of 21st century authoring,” said Eileen Gittins, Blurb's founder and CEO.

o President Obama Unveils Plan to Increase Interest in STEM Careers

o Report: PayPal-Related Phishing Attacks Spike 73% During First Quarter

McLean, Va. -- Phishing attacks aimed at PayPal users increased 73% during the first quarter, according to a new report from McLean-based Cyren. During a two-week sampling taken during the quarter, the company found that the number of PayPal-related phishing URLs increased from approximately 750 a day in the fourth quarter to more than 1,300 a day. "The upward trend illustrates the move by cybercriminals from less profitable spam to attacks that generate more revenue," the company said. Other top brands used to lure email recipients were Apple, Poste Italiane, Barclays Bank, Battle.net and Sparkasse.

(San Francisco) San Francisco-based Twist Bioscience said on Tuesday it has raised $26 million in its second round of funding, which the company will use to commercialize its semiconductor-based synthetic gene manufacturing process. Nick and Joby Pritzker, through their family's firm Tao Invest, led the round, which also included participation from ARCH Venture Partners, Paladin Capital Group, Yuri Milner and additional investors. All of the company's previous backers participated. The company also received a $5.1 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund development of its technology platform for the large-scale, high-throughput construction of genetic designs.
