o San Francisco-Based Thumbtack Raises $30 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Thumbtack, the San Francisco-based developer of a service designed to introduce customers to several available and qualified professionals, said it has raised $30 million in its third round of funding, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Tiger Global Management. The company, which now has raised $49 million since its inception, will use the proceeds to "significantly" grow its staff and bolster product development. "There are many services that provide listings of professionals with ratings and phone numbers, but end there," said co-founder and CEO Marco Zappacosta. "Thumbtack goes much farther -- instead of just showing you information, we connect you with professionals ready to do your job within hours." The average project on Thumbtack is $600, in categories led by Personal Training, Catering, Moving, Interior Painting and Singing Lessons. The company said it sends an estimated $1.8 billion worth of business annually to 63,000 paying professionals.

o Mountain View-Based Golgi Launches After Raising $5 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Golgi, the Mountain View-based developer of a data transfer platform designed to hasten loading times for connected devices and mobile apps, said it has launched operations after raising $5 million in funding from Openmind Networks. The company, founded last year by Openmind, said its goal is to help developers and engineers retain the 79% of consumers who stop using an app after two bouts of poor functionality. Its tools let developers create data-transfer code, which they can plug into their programs. The platform then keeps apps up-to-date with the latest messages, news, profile updates, high scores and notifications from connected devices. "All it takes is the blink of an eye for someone to decide whether they want to keep using an app or device," said CTO Brian Kelly. "Golgi helps protect developers from building a great product only to see it fail because they're not experts in data transport between devices."

o AOL Acquires PrecisionDemand to Bolster San Mateo-Based Adap.tv

New York -- Looking to bolster its platform capabilities around TV and digital video, AOL has acquired New York-based PrecisionDemand, a developer of tools designed to target TV and measure its results more effectively. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. PrecisionDemand will become part of San Mateo-based Adap.tv, developer of a programmatic video ad platform that AOL acquired for $405 million last summer. "PrecisionDemand will be a key component of our advanced TV targeting, attribution and optimization technology available in the market," wrote Toby Gabriner, the CEO of Adap.tv, in a blog post.

o San Francisco-Based Wikia Acquires Community Platform Huddler

San Francisco -- Wikia, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform that allows users to form new web communities around any subject or participate in over 400,000 existing communities, said it has acquired San Francisco-based Huddler, a developer of community-driven sites with roots in retail and affiliate advertising. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Wikia said the acquisition bolsters its talent and commerce technologies, while expanding its lifestyle communities focused on subjects such as fashion, technology and outdoors. "The acquisition allows us to embrace an unduplicated audience of over 12 million who convene and connect around their passions in areas like technology, fashion, sports and other lifestyle pursuits," said Wikia CEO Craig Palmer. Wikia has retained Huddler co-founders Ted and Dan Gill, as well as a majority of the company's engineering, product and business development staff. Huddler's more than 20 sites will continue to operate independent of the Wikia platform.
