o Palo Alto-Based Brigade Media Acquires Causes-Parent Philotic

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Brigade Media, a Palo Alto-based civic engagement startup backed by Napster co-founder and former Facebook president Sean Parker, said on Wednesday it has acquired a controlling stake in San Francisco-based Philotic, the company that owns online campaigning platform Causes and political advocacy startup Votizen. Financial terms of the deal, the startup's first acquisition, were not disclosed. Matt Mahan, the former CEO of Causes, will become the CEO of Brigade, and James Windon, Causes' vice president of revenue, will become president. Brigade, which in April raised $9.5 million from Parker and Silicon Valley heavyweights Ron Conway and Marc Benioff, called the acquisition critical in fulfilling its mission to "re-energize interest in democracy." "When launched, Brigade will serve as a tool to empower people civically, enabling any person to engage with their representatives in a way that is easy, social and enjoyable," the company said.
