The project will be supported with a $3.89 million investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The platform will allow readers to submit pictures, links and other media; track discussions; and manage their contributions and online identities. Publishers will then be able to use this content in their storytelling, and provide readers with targeted content and notifications. Tools such as reputation scores and self-policing also will make it easier for news organizations to monitor comments. Mozilla's Dan Sinker, head of the Knight-Mozilla Open News initiative, will lead the project. "This isn't another commenting platform for publishers; it's a publishing platform for readers," said Greg Barber, director of digital news projects at The Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/community-relations/mozilla-the-new-york-times-and-the-washington-post-launch-new-media-collaboration-to-create-an-online-community-platform-for-reader-comments-and-contributions/2014/06/18/8b2225ac-f730-11e3-a606-946fd632f9f1_story.html _____________________________________________ o San Jose-Based eBay Acquires Machine Translation Technology from AppTek San Jose, Calif. -- eBay, the San Jose-based online auction giant, said it has acquired machine translation technology from Virginia-based AppTek, a developer of natural language processing technology.
