o San Francisco-Based RelayRides Raises $25 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- RelayRides, the San Francisco-based developer of a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace, said on Tuesday it has landed $25 million in its second round of funding, led by Canaan Partners. Previous backers August Capital, Google Ventures and Shasta Ventures also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $44 million. Deepak Kamra, a general partner at Canaan, will join the company's board of directors. RelayRides said it will use the proceeds to accelerate customer acquisition, enhance existing products and expand into new geographies and services. Launched nationwide in early 2012, RelayRides now offers vehicles in more than 2,300 U.S. cities. The service is designed to connect people who need a car with owners whose vehicles would otherwise go unused, promising rates that average 40% less than traditional rental car companies.

Mountain View, Calif. -- Aerospike, the Mountain View-based developer of an in-memory NoSQL database used for real-time bidding, said on Tuesday it has raised $20 million in its third round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Columbus Nova Technology Partners, Alsop Louie Partners and Regis McKenna also participated. The company said its database has been adopted by an increasing number of financial services, telecom and retail clients to power multi-channel apps that respond in real time based on what consumers are doing, where they are and what they want. [The funding] provides the resources we need to open source Aerospike and take advantage of this broad market opportunity," said CEO Joe Gottlieb.

o Student-Led Mission to Mars Launches $25M Crowdfunding Campaign

Washington, DC -- Organizers of a planned student-led mission to Mars officially kicked off a $25 million crowdfunding campaign Monday. The mission, called Time Capsule to Mars (TC2M), aims to launch and land a time capsule on Mars containing data that memorializes the digital keepsakes of the human race. The capsule will contain messages from tens of millions of people in the form of text, images, audio and video clips, which the group hopes will be "rediscovered by future colonists of the Red Planet." The group is raising funds by charging $0.99 a message, up to 10 MB. The group includes founder and mission director Emily Briere, a senior at Duke University, as well as Duke grad student Jon Tidd, a production intern at SpaceX. The mission also is being supported by NASA and companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and ATK.
