o Samsonite Acquires Mountain View-Based Speck Products

Mountain View, Calif. -- Samsonite, the large luggage manufacturer with U.S. headquarters in Massachusetts, said it has paid $85 million in cash to acquire Mountain View-based Speck Products, a developer of protective cases for personal electronic devices, from private equity firm VMG Partners. Samsonite said the acquisition will allow it to extend its offering beyond its traditional travel luggage products. Founded in 2001, Speck offers a range of products for smartphones, tablets and laptops. The brand is known for its "slim protection" designs such as the CandyShell "hard-soft" material case. Last year, Speck reported net sales of $104.8 million. "With our strong foundation in the U.S. mobile device protective case market and Samsonite's geographic reach, we see new and vast opportunities to grow the Speck brand to its full potential," said Speck CEO Irene Baran.

o San Francisco's Vend Names Sharad Mohan as Chief Customer Officer

San Francisco -- Vend, a New Zealand-based developer of online point-of-sale software with major operations in San Francisco, on Tuesday named Sharad Mohan as its chief customer officer, working with the thousands of small and independent retailers operating on the company's retail management platform. Mohan most recently served as the director of customer success at HootSuite. The news comes two months after Vend raised $20 million in a round of funding co-led by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel of Valar Ventures and Australia's Square Peg Capital. The company's cloud-based software allows retailers to process sales, track inventory and manage customers. It works on any device or platform, including iPads and existing POS hardware.
