Samsonite said the acquisition will allow it to extend its offering beyond its traditional travel luggage products. Founded in 2001, Speck offers a range of products for smartphones, tablets and laptops. The brand is known for its "slim protection" designs such as the CandyShell "hard-soft" material case. Last year, Speck reported net sales of $104.8 million. The campaign, which still has 12 days remaining, has drawn more than 10,000 backers. SCiO, a handheld optical sensor that reads the chemical make-up of materials, is now the fifth most funded tech campaign in Kickstarter history. Mohan most recently served as the director of customer success at HootSuite. The news comes two months after Vend raised $20 million in a round of funding co-led by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel of Valar Ventures and Australia's Square Peg Capital. The company is using the funds to expand its presence in the North American market through new partnerships, resellers, staff and customers.
