o San Jose-Based Malwarebytes Raises $30 Million in First Round

San Jose, Calif. -- Malwarebytes, a San Jose-based developer of software designed to protect users from advanced online threats, said on Thursday it has raised $30 million in its first round of funding from Highland Capital Partners. "This round of financing will accelerate our global expansion plans," said CEO Marcin Kleczynski, who developed the earliest versions of the company's software while working as a technician when he was just 14 years old. Four years later in 2008, he formally launched the company with a free tool co-developed alongside two fellow enthusiasts who he met in an online forum. The software is designed to stop advanced malware, zero-day exploits and mobile threats.

o San Jose-Based Altierre Lands $21 Million in New Funding Round

San Jose, Calif. -- Altierre, a San Jose-based developer of wireless technology used to power the "Internet of Things," said on Thursday it has landed more than $21 million in a new round of funding, co-led by new investor Stratim Capital and D.E. Shaw & Co. Previous backers ATA Ventures, DuPont Capital Management, Labrador Ventures and Kinetic Ventures also participated. "Our proprietary wireless technology is installed at thousands of retailers’ stores today and this financing will provide the necessary resources to expand that to thousands more," said Sunit Saxena, the company's chairman and CEO. "We are now well capitalized to lead the charge in bringing the Internet of Things to retail aisles globally and enhance efficiencies within retail stores." Millions of Altierre's digital signs are currently installed and operating nationwide in retail stores, as well as in several hypermarket stores across France operated by retail chain E.Leclerc.

o San Francisco-Based BitFury Group Launches Seed Fund

San Francisco -- BitFury Group, a San Francisco-based provider of bitcoin and cryptocurrency infrastructure, said it has launched a new seed investment fund called BitFury Capital. The fund, to operate as a unit of BitFury Group, will provide seed funding to early-stage companies in the industry. It also will have the ability to participate in later-stage rounds by drawing on capital from the BitFury Group. o Visiting CEO Taken on High-Speed Chase by Washington, DC Uber Driver

Washington, DC -- After surviving fierce regulatory fights to operate in Washington, DC, San Francisco-based on-demand car service Uber is now dealing with a PR nightmare involving one of its local drivers. The CEO of New York-based Convene said an Uber driver, hired to take he and two colleagues from a meeting in downtown DC to the company's new conference center in Northern Virginia on Tuesday, instead took the businessmen on a high-speed car chase, with a taxi inspector in pursuit. "Was just kidnapped by an @uber driver in DC, held against my will, and involved in a high speed chase across state lines with police #Crazy," tweeted Ryan Simonetti moments after the incident, which ended on an exit ramp in Northern Virginia. "We are very grateful that we emerged from this experience safely, but quite shaken," Simonetti wrote on Thursday. "It was not my intention to embarrass or call attention to the company since I am a dedicated Uber user and believe they have a great business model. At the same time, I hope that Uber will learn something from this experience." An Uber spokesman told The Washington Post, "Rider safety is our No. 1 priority. We will cooperate with authorities in their investigation and have deactivated the driver pending the outcome."
