"This round of financing will accelerate our global expansion plans," said CEO Marcin Kleczynski, who developed the earliest versions of the company's software while working as a technician when he was just 14 years old. Four years later in 2008, he formally launched the company with a free tool co-developed alongside two fellow enthusiasts who he met in an online forum. The CEO of New York-based Convene said an Uber driver, hired to take he and two colleagues from a meeting in downtown DC to the company's new conference center in Northern Virginia on Tuesday, instead took the businessmen on a high-speed car chase, with a taxi inspector in pursuit. "Was just kidnapped by an @uber driver in DC, held against my will, and involved in a high speed chase across state lines with police #Crazy," tweeted Ryan Simonetti moments after the incident, which ended on an exit ramp in Northern Virginia. "We are very grateful that we emerged from this experience safely, but quite shaken," Simonetti wrote on Thursday. "It was not my intention to embarrass or call attention to the company since I am a dedicated Uber user and believe they have a great business model. At the same time, I hope that Uber will learn something from this experience." An Uber spokesman told The Washington Post, "Rider safety is our No. 1 priority.
