o Number of VC Funds That Raised Capital in Q2 Reaches Seven-Year High

New York -- The number of U.S. venture capital funds that raised capital hit a seven-year high during the second quarter, according to new figures from Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). All told, venture capital firms raised $7.4 billion for 78 funds during the quarter, a 24% increase in the number of funds, though a 19% drop in capital raised. The number of funds, in fact, reached its highest point since the fourth quarter of 2007. "Although it moderated slightly from the first quarter, the second quarter fundraising environment for U.S. venture capital firms was very strong compared to recent years," said Bobby Franklin, president and CEO of the NVCA. "Driven by the strong performance of venture-backed companies in the public markets, we believe the solid distributions made to limited partners in recent quarters are resulting in new commitments to venture capital funds that can then be invested in American entrepreneurs."

o Report: World Cup Fans Driving Sharp Increase in Mobile Traffic

San Mateo, Calif. -- Soccer fans from around the world have been turning to their mobile devices in large numbers to follow the ongoing World Cup, according to a new report from Opera Mediaworks. Starting June 12, mobile traffic began climbing, hitting a peak between June 23-26, which was the final week of group matches. It then dropped off dramatically the following day, only to return to previous levels once the round of 16 began. The company said that Asia and Africa are consuming more soccer content on their devices than the U.S., Europe and even Latin America. While the U.S, Brazil, Mexico and most European countries are in the top 10 for overall traffic, when it comes to soccer, they barely graze the top 25. Instead, countries like Bangladesh, Nigeria, South Africa, Malaysia and Pakistan are ranking the highest for traffic to soccer-related sites and apps.
