o Redwood City-Based Athos Raises $12.2 Million in Second Round

Redwood City, Calif. -- Athos, a Redwood City-based developer of wearable sensors and performance apparel, said on Tuesday it has raised $12.2 million in its second round of funding, led by DCM. Other participants included True Ventures; Joe Lacob, the managing partner and chairman of the Golden State Warriors; NBA all-star Jermaine O'Neal and previous backer The Social+Capital Partnership. The company said it will use the funds to further commercialize its product and bolster its manufacturing and marketing efforts. Athos said its apparel line, available this fall, will be able to collect and analyze muscle activity and effort, as well as heart and breathing rates. Launched in 2010 by co-founders Dhananja Jayalath, Christopher Wiebe and Chamath Palihapitiya, the core of Athos' technology evolved through an advanced engineering project at the University of Waterloo. The technology incorporates electromyography, or EMG, one of the most effective ways of tracking muscles.

o Push Technology Raises $5 Million, Opens U.S. Headquarters in San Jose

San Jose, Calif. -- Push Technology, the U.K.-based developer of a data distribution platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $5 million in its first round of funding and opened U.S. headquarters in San Jose. Leopard Rock Capital led the round, which also included several previous and new investors. Push, which already had an office in New York City, called its expansion to the West Coast a natural next step in bolstering the adoption of its Diffusion platform with U.S. companies. "We're already seeing growing interest in Diffusion from U.S. companies, so establishing an official presence state-side was key to capitalizing on that interest," said CEO Sean Bowen. "The Bay Area, in particular, is a hotbed of next-generation apps and new technologies, and represents a strategic opportunity for us to grow our presence in the U.S., especially as data-heavy trends like the Internet of Things, M2M and mobility adoption continue to develop."

o S.F.-Based Vector Capital to Sell SafeNet for $890 Million

San Francisco -- Vector Capital, the San Francisco-based investment firm, said it will sell Maryland-based SafeNet, a developer of data protection technology, to Netherlands-based Gemalto for $890 million. The deal is expected to close by year's end. Gemalto said the acquisition will significantly bolster its identity and access management business. SafeNet's technology currently protects more than 80% of the world's intra-bank fund transfers. The company's more than 1,500 employees, including 550 cryptographic engineers, serve over 25,000 clients, such as Bank of America, Cisco, Dell, H-P, Kaiser Permanente, Netflix and Starbucks. "This transaction will accelerate the delivery of Gemalto's security solutions to the enterprise while also making SafeNet's data protection solutions accessible to the banking and telecom sectors -- truly a win-win for everyone involved," said Prakash Panjwani, SafeNet's president and CEO.

Previous backer The Whittemore Collection also took part in the round, which the company will use to scale its product development team and add to its customer implementation group. Acupera's technology is designed to help health systems evaluate their patient population and develop appropriate strategies for managing care. The company's system is currently deployed at St. Vincent Medical Center, a 22-hospital system in Indianapolis, Indiana.

o San Francisco No. 12 on Cvent's List of Top 50 U.S. Meeting Destinations

San Francisco -- San Francisco leads local cities on Cvent's 2014 list of the Top 50 Meeting Destinations in the U.S. San Francisco fell one spot to No. 12 in the rankings, which are based on booking activity in Cvent's supplier network. San Jose, which fell one spot to No. 47, also made the cut. Chicago topped the list, followed by last year's leader, Orlando, with Las Vegas, Atlanta and San Diego rounding out the top five. "While investment in infrastructure, hotels and entertainment is critical for being an attractive destination, one of the stand-out trends this year is out of destinations' control -- location," said Bharet Malhotra, senior vice president of sales for the Cvent Supplier Network. "Across several metrics, we have seen more booking and interest in Midwestern and other centrally located cities during the past 12 months." The complete list is available at the link below.
