o San Francisco-Based DripDrop Lands $5.6 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- DripDrop, the San Francisco-based developer of a medical-grade rehydration drink, said on Thursday it has raised $5.6 million in a new round of funding from a veritable who's who of investors. Participants included owners of the San Francisco 49ers, Seth Taube of Medley and rock musicians Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani and Bob Weir. The company said the funds will support its continued national rollout to retail pharmacies and hospitals. "Not only will this investment help accelerate DripDrop’s availability on retail shelves nationwide, but the funds will also speed delivery to hospitals as a simple and cost-effective replacement for IVs, which are currently in short supply," said CEO Doug Wolf. DripDrop's scientific formula conforms to proven ratios of salts, sugars, potassium and other ingredients, absorbing faster and hydrating better than water and other hydration products. The company's formula has been adopted by users including Stanford University Medical Center, The Mayo Clinic, UCSF Medical Center, national pharmacies, U.S. Special Forces and a number of athletes.

o Oakland-Based Ask.com Acquires Social Network Ask.fm

Oakland -- Ask.com, the Oakland-based online questions and answers unit of IAC, said on Thursday it has acquired Latvia-based social networking site Ask.fm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and the two companies had not previously been affiliated. Ask.fm's site facilitates question and answer exchanges across its user base of 180 million monthly unique visitors. The site generates an estimated 20,000 questions a minute, and its mobile app has been downloaded more than 40 million times. "This acquisition extends Ask.com's Q&A brand leadership to Ask.fm's massive mobile-focused social platform," said Doug Leeds, the CEO of Ask.com. "It's a natural entry into a market segment and platform where Ask.com has been looking to expand."

o Cisco Systems to Cut 6,000 Jobs in Latest Restructuring

San Jose, Calif. -- Shares of San Jose-based Cisco Systems dropped 3% in Thursday's trading after the networking equipment giant announced plans to cut 6,000 jobs, or about 8% of its global workforce. It marks at least the third major round of layoffs in as many years for the company, which will take $700 million in restructuring charges. "The market doesn't wait for anyone. We are going to lead it, period," said John Chambers, the company's chairman and CEO. "The ability to do that requires some tough decisions. We will manage our costs aggressively and drive efficiencies."

Resolute Ventures and Felicis Ventures also took part in the round, which the company will use to bolster product developer, customer success and sales activities. Mamoon Hamid, general partner at Social+Capital Partnership, will join the company's board of directors. o Survey: 91% of Americans Not Using All of Their Work Software

San Mateo, Calif. -- An overwhelming 91% of Americans do not use all of their software at work, according to a new survey by San Mateo-based Coupa Software. Top reasons given by the 1,000 U.S. adults surveyed were that it slows down or crashes their computers, doesn't always work correctly, is outdated, isn't user-friendly or that they simply didn't know the software was installed. "If companies are providing software that employees won' use, they are exposing themselves to a host of risks and problems -- from wasted resources to potential compliance issues," said Ravi Thakur, Coupa's vice president of customer success. "Whether it's mission critical or a desktop productivity app, if employees aren't using their work software, it's not only a major expenditure but also a glaring missed opportunity for the company."
