o Ticketmaster Acquires Menlo Park-Based Eventjoy

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Ticketmaster said it will pay an unspecified amount to acquire Menlo Park-based Eventjoy, developer of a mobile, do-it-yourself ticketing platform. Eventjoy's platform is designed to help organizers self-manage their events. Besides ticketing, the technology also includes social marketing, analytics and customer engagement tools, all delivered through a mobile app. "The DIY space is one where we think Eventjoy's [technology]… can be combined with the scale of our platform and distribution capabilities." Eventjoy, which was born out of Y Combinator, said opportunity for growth made the decision to sell easy. "By combining forces with Ticketmaster, we can scale Eventjoy to bring it to a global user base," said co-founder Todd Goldberg.

o Mountain View-Based Google Acquire Online Poll Company Polar

Mountain View, Calif. -- Looking to boost its social media technology, Mountain View-based Google has acquired Polar, developer of a platform designed to let users add polls to web and mobile sites. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The New York Times reported that this is primarily a talent acquisition, centered around Polar founder Luke Wroblewski and his team of engineers and designers. "To help our existing customers with this transition, we're keeping our publisher tools available until the end of 2014," the company said, adding "we're delighted to be joining the Google+ team and bringing our arctic circle sensibilities to sunny California."

o Yahoo Releases Documents Related to Federal Surveillance Case

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo on Thursday released more than 1,500 pages of documents related to its once-secret challenge to the expansion of U.S. surveillance laws late last decade. In 2007, the federal government amended a law to demand user information from online services. Yahoo said it refused to comply, calling the measure "unconstitutional" and "overbroad surveillance," but eventually lost its challenge. Now, however, the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review (FISC-R) has agreed to unseal the proceedings at the company's request. Yahoo said it eventually plans to make all 1,500 pages available to the public. "We consider this an important win for transparency, and hope that these records help promote informed discussion about the relationship between privacy, due process and intelligence gathering," wrote Ron Bell, Yahoo's general counsel, in a blog post.

o More Than 10,000 Websites Take Part in "Internet Slowdown"

Washington, DC -- More than 10,000 websites took part in Wednesday's "Internet Slowdown," a one-day effort to support stronger net neutrality protections, according to event organizers Demand Progress, Engine Advocacy, Fight for the Future and the Free Press Action Fund. Several high-profile companies, including Twitter, Netflix and Tumblr, took part in the effort, adding a spinning icon to their websites, representing a slow-loading Internet. The icon linked to a series of actions to members of Congress, the White House and the FCC. Organizers also said that people shared the spinning icon on Facebook more than 1.1 million times, with nearly 2.2 million emails sent to Congress. The protest aimed to prevent Internet providers from being able to create "fast lanes" that would allow companies to pay for faster access to their sites.
