Previous backer Genesis Partners and individual angels also participated. Simon Rothman from Greylock will join the company's board. Through EatWith, hosts open their homes to small gatherings for homemade meals. Guests can scroll through a variety of options on the site, then pay a per-guest fee. The company, which now has raised $15.5 million since its inception, said it will use the proceeds to further develop its platform. The company's platform is designed to let employees and brand ambassadors actively participate in a brand's content marketing, social selling, social recruiting and employee engagement initiatives. "Our platform makes it easy for all employees and brand ambassadors to consume and share brand-safe content, and significantly improve the return on social and content marketing," said founder and CEO Gregory Shove. The goal of the program is to identify the most promising startups in four categories -- education, energy, health and cities. A year ago, the inaugural competition received 5,000 applications, with 480 startups selected to compete. Nine of them received investments from 1776. This year's competition will kick off in two cities -- Washington, DC on Oct. 21 and Chicago on Oct. 28. The "skills gap" refers to a disparity between the skills Americans have and those employers are seeking. Despite a perception among 1,000 workers polled that a gap does exist, 95% consider themselves to be either qualified or overqualified for the positions they personally hold. That's despite a recent ManpowerGroup survey that found 40% of U.S. employers report difficulty in filling vacant positions with qualified employees. "American employees share an `It's not me, it's you' mentality," said Dennis Yang, the CEO of Udemy. "The data also shows that while higher education may be effective at helping individuals score their first job, skills and knowledge learned at academic institutions become obsolete as Americans change professions and skill-set requirements change."
