In his new role, VanRoekel will serve as a senior adviser to Rajiv Shah, administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and also work as that agency's chief innovation officer. "Technology is not the solution to this extremely difficult task, but it will be a part of the solution and I look forward to partnering with our federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector tech communities to help accelerate this effort," said VanRoekel in a statement. The total amount Americans have spent on repair and replacement of their smartphones in the past seven years -- including iPhones -- is over $23.5 billion. The study, based on surveys with more than 2,400 smartphone users, combines the cost of repairs, replacements and insurance deductibles for cracked, dropped, submerged and water-damaged devices. The company said the most common damage for users is the cracked screen.
