o Steve VanRoekel Steps Down as Nation's CIO to Help U.S. Fight Ebola

Washington, DC -- Following three years on the job, former Microsoft executive Steve VanRoekel on Friday unexpectedly stepped down as the federal chief information officer (CIO) to help coordinate the federal government's efforts to fight the Ebola outbreak, Politico reported. In his new role, VanRoekel will serve as a senior adviser to Rajiv Shah, administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and also work as that agency's chief innovation officer. "Technology is not the solution to this extremely difficult task, but it will be a part of the solution and I look forward to partnering with our federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector tech communities to help accelerate this effort," said VanRoekel in a statement. Lisa Schlosser, a deputy administrator, will serve as interim CIO while the White House searches for a replacement.

o EverFi Teams with White House on Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign

Washington, DC -- EverFi, a developer of education technology focused on life skills such as financial literacy, cyberbullying and alcohol abuse, said on Friday it has partnered with the White House on a new sexual assault prevention campaign called "It's On Us." The company's leaders joined President Obama and Vice President Biden to officially launch the initiative, which aims to stop sexual assault on college campuses. EverFi said that more than 200 colleges and universities have adopted its "Haven - Understanding Sexual Assault" program over the past 60 days. "When you get that dream acceptance letter into college, it shouldn’t also mean your risk of being sexually assaulted goes up," said COO Tammy Wincup. "Along with committed campuses, student voices can play a significant role in turning this tide."

o Study: Damaged iPhones Have Cost Americans $10.7 Billion

San Francisco -- Damaged iPhones have cost Americans $10.7 bullion since their introduction in 2007, according to a new study by San Francisco-based SquareTrade. The total amount Americans have spent on repair and replacement of their smartphones in the past seven years -- including iPhones -- is over $23.5 billion. The study, based on surveys with more than 2,400 smartphone users, combines the cost of repairs, replacements and insurance deductibles for cracked, dropped, submerged and water-damaged devices. The company said the most common damage for users is the cracked screen. All told, one-quarter of iPhone owners have cracked a screen at some point, with 15% currently using an iPhone with a cracked screen, SquareTrade said.
