o Los Gatos-Based Spikes Security Lands $11 Million in First Round
Los Gatos, Calif. -- Spikes Security, a Los Gatos-based developer of tools designed to eliminate browser-borne malware, said on Wednesday it has landed $11 million in its first round of funding. Lakewood & Company, Benhamou Global Ventures and Javelin Venture Partners co-led the round, which the company will use to continue developing its malware isolation appliances, as well as expand sales in several target market segments. Spikes Security was founded in 2012 by former PayPal and SpaceX CIO Branden Spikes. The company's initial product is a browser isolation system called AirGap, which is designed to keep browser-borne malware from penetrating corporate networks.

o Menlo Park-Based Kespry Raises $10 Million in First Round
Menlo Park, Calif. -- Kespry, a Menlo Park-based developer of drone systems for commercial applications, said on Wednesday it has raised $10 million in its first round of funding, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company, which was founded last year and received initial backing from Chmod Ventures, said it will use the latest funds to finance go-to-market activities and further develop its technology. Kespry said its drones are designed to help businesses -- particularly those in the construction, agriculture and mining markets -- capture and examine aerial imagery.

o EMC to Acquire Majority Stake in VCE; Cisco, VMware to Retain Stakes
Hopkinton, Mass.-- EMC, the Massachusetts-based data infrastructure company, said on Wednesday it will acquire a majority stake in VCE, a Texas-based virtual computing technology firm that it founded in 2009 with San Jose-based Cisco Systems and Palo Alto-based VMware. Cisco will retain a 10% stake in the company, with VMware also maintaining an unspecified stake. The companies said that VCE will focus on simplifying the deployment of hybrid clouds, including a range of converged infrastructure offerings.

o San Francisco Ranked as Top U.S. City for Crowdfunding
San Francisco -- San Francisco is the most hospitable city in the U.S. for crowdfunding, according to a new list from Crowdfund Capital Advisors in conjunction with The Crowdfunding Center. The index ranks the impact of crowdfunding on jobs and entrepreneurial activity in every state and 100 cities across the U.S. San Francisco topped Salt Lake City on the list, which also includes Berkeley at No. 5. "We can immediately see how crowdfunding has taken hold in places like Washington, DC and San Francisco and what it is capable of achieving," said Barry James, founder and CEO of The Crowd Data Center. "Some very promising challengers and ‘many in the middle’ follow this. But there are whole states that look more like a desert and it's, paradoxically, in these that the most pent-up potential most probably exists." Rockville, Md. -- Goodwill Industries International and 21 regional Goodwill agencies -- including those located in Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa -- have received a $5.4 million software grant from Microsoft. The donated software includes Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office products and internal office systems. It marks Microsoft's third investment in Goodwill's enterprise's technology infrastructure.
