o Burlingame-Based PlayStudios Lands $20 Million in Third Round
Burlingame, Calif. -- PlayStudios, a Burlingame-based developer of social casino games such as myVEGAS Slots and myVEGAS Blackjack, said on Thursday it has raised $20 million in its third round of funding, led by Jafco Ventures. Several previous investors also took part in the round, which the company said will give it greater financial flexibility for growth. PlayStudios said its casino game apps have been downloaded more than 18 million times since its first product launch in late 2012. The company's myVEGAS games are free-to-play and offer users a chance to earn real-world rewards from travel, leisure and hospitality brands such as ARIA, Bellagio, Royal Caribbean International, Cirque du Soleil, MGM Grand, Wolfgang Puck, House of Blues, Mandalay Bay, the Mirage, the Las Vegas Monorail and Sugar Factory.

o San Francisco-Based Zignal Labs Raises $10.7 Million in Second Round
San Francisco -- Zignal Labs, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform designed to help users make decisions faster by aggregating data from millions of sources, said on Thursday it has raised $10.7 million in its second round of funding. Participants included previous backers Andy Ballard, managing partner of Figtree Partners; Mitchell Cohen, manager of Ross Investment Associates; and Jim Hornthal, co-founder and chairman of Zignal Labs. The company, which also has offices in Washington, DC, will use the proceeds to expand its leadership, sales and engineering teams. Zignal also said it has formalized its executive team by naming co-founders Josh Ginsberg as its CEO and Adam Beaugh as its president and chief product officer. In addition, the three-year-old company has named Alyson Welch as its vice president of sales.

o Mountain View-Based Google Acquires San Francisco-Based Firebase
Mountain View, Calif. -- Boosting its tools for mobile app development, Mountain View-based Google said it has acquired San Francisco-based Firebase, developer of a platform designed to help developers sync data across web and mobile apps. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The company, which has more than 110,000 developer users, will become part of Google's Cloud Platform team. Co-founders James Tamplin and Andrew Lee will continue to lead an employee base that will remain largely intact. "Google's backing allows us to dramatically scale Firebase," wrote Tamplin. "We're proud of what we've built over the last three years, but we've only scratched the surface of the opportunity ahead of us. With Google's engineering talent, resources, and technical infrastructure, we’ll be able to do much more, much faster."

o Sunnyvale-Based Good Technology Acquires Macheen
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Good Technology, a Sunnyvale-based developer of enterprise mobility tools that allow employees to connect to corporate networks using their personal mobile devices, said it has acquired Texas-based Macheen, a provider of mobile cloud application services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Good said the acquisition will help clients that allow employees to use their personal mobile devices at work (known as BYOD, or bring your own device) lower the costs and risks associated with rapidly expanding mobile regulations, tax liabilities and complexities around mobile reimbursement and corporate stipend programs. "By acquiring Macheen and its cloud-based offering, and coupling that with expanded carrier relationships, we will be securely and cost-effectively taking more friction out of deploying secure mobile apps and workflows," said Christy Wyatt, the chairman and CEO of Good.

o San Jose-Based NeoPhotonics to Acquire Product Lines from Emcore
San Jose, Calif. -- NeoPhotonics, a San Jose-based developer of photonic integrated circuits used in high-speed communications networks, said on Thursday it will pay $17.5 million to acquire the tunable laser and transceiver product lines of New Mexico-based Emcore. The deal, which consists of $1.5 million in cash and the remainder in a promissory note, is expected to close in early January. NeoPhotonics said it plans to add Emcore's tunable lasers to its current product line, and integrate the company's facility in Newark into its existing Silicon Valley operations. "Emcore's narrow linewidth tunable laser product line is highly complementary to our broad existing portfolio of optical components for 100 Gigabits per second coherent transport systems, and this acquisition significantly expands our footprint in this rapidly growing segment," said Tim Jenks, the chairman and CEO of NeoPhotonics.
