o Streaming Music Service Deezer to Acquire San Francisco-Based Stitcher

San Francisco -- Deezer, the France-based operator of a digital music streaming service, said on Friday it will acquire San Francisco-based Stitcher, developer of a personalized Internet talk radio app. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. With the acquisition, Deezer will offer more than 35 million music tracks and 35,000 radio shows and podcasts. Stitcher features content from more than 12,000 sources, including NPR, BBC, Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, This American Life, Marc Maron and CBS Radio News. Deezer will continue to support Stitcher's mobile products. "Almost every music listener listens to some form of talk radio, whether it is news, entertainment or sports," said Daniel Marhely, the founder of Deezer. "The acquisition of Stitcher helps us realize this opportunity."

o WSJ: Former Apple Exec Raises $30M for Menlo Park-Based Retail Startup

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Ron Johnson, the former Apple executive who built that company's wildly successfully retail strategy, has raised $30 million for his new Menlo Park-based online shopping startup, known as Enjoy. The Wall Street Journal reported that the stealthy company aims to help shoppers develop deeper connections to items they purchase online, like Apple Stores allow shoppers to try products before they buy. "There's more to life than logistics. There's more to life than a review," Johnson told the Journal. "Just because we're moving online, it doesn't mean that need for a connection is going away/" The funding reportedly includes a recent $25 million round co-led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Oak Investment Partners, with Andreessen Horowitz also investing. Johnson departed Apple in 2011 to become the CEO of JCPenney, where he had a much less successful tenure and was ousted last year.

o Silicon Valley VC Confidence Declines for First Time in Two Years

San Francisco -- The confidence of Bay Area venture capitalists fell for the first time in two years during the third quarter, according to the newly released Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index. The index, produced by University of San Francisco professor Mark Cannice and based on a survey of 33 Bay Area venture capitalists, registered a 3.89 out of 5, down from 4.02 a quarter ago. "The lower Q3 index reading raises some concern for the near to medium term outlook for the high-growth venture environment," wrote Cannice. "Worries over inflated valuations and their eventual impact on the venture business model drove the decline in confidence. However, healthy levels of investment and fundraising, rampant disruptive innovation, and VC's belief in the determination of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs kept sentiment at a relatively high level." The complete report is available at the link below.

o Senators Seek Commerce Committee Hearing on Internet-of-Things

Washington, DC -- With the so-called "Internet-of-Things" market expected to grow at a feverish pace over the next several years, a group of four U.S. Senators is now looking to sort out a range of cutting-edge policy issues related to the Internet-connected devices. In a letter to the leadership of the Senate Commerce Committee, Senators Deb Fischer (R-NE), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) have requested a hearing on the matter by year's end. "The proliferation of connected products is sparking a number of important policy questions related to consumer protection, security, privacy, technical standards, spectrum capacity, manufacturing, regulatory certainty and public-sector applications, among many others," they wrote. "The number and the scope of these issues demands our prompt attention so we can better understand the technologies and explore how best to preserve America's global leadership position in innovation and economic growth.
