o San Francisco-Based Strava Raises $18.5 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Strava, the San Francisco-based developer of an online network connecting athletes, said on Wednesday it has landed $18.5 million in a new round of funding, led by Sequoia. Previous backers Sigma West and Madrone Capital Partners also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand its service globally. Strava currently connects athletes in 11 languages across 23 different sports, with approximately 3 million activities tracked and shared by the company's community each week. "Since day one we have focused on building a network that serves to motivate and entertain the world's athletes," said Mark Gainey, co-founder and CEO at Strava. "With Sequoia joining our team, we are better positioned to execute our mission and strengthen Strava's leadership in digital sports."

o FTC Alleges That AT&T Reduced Speeds of Unlimited Data Customers

San Francisco -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is alleging that wireless giant AT&T Mobility has misled millions of its smartphone customers by charging them for "unlimited" data plans while reducing their data speeds, in some cases by nearly 90%. In a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco, the FTC said that AT&T failed to disclose that when customers reach a certain amount of data use in a billing cycle, the company reduces their data speeds to the point where tasks like web browsing and GPS navigation become difficult if not impossible. The FTC said AT&T has throttled at least 3.5 million unique customers a total of more than 25 million times. "AT&T promised its customers 'unlimited' data, and in many instances, it has failed to deliver on that promise," said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. "The issue here is simple: 'unlimited' means unlimited."

o S.F.-Based Uber Gets Nod to Continue Operating in Washington, DC

San Francisco -- The Washington, DC Council on Tuesday passed first-of-its-kind ridesharing legislation -- known as the Vehicle-for-Hire Innovation Act -- that clears a path for San Francisco-based Uber to continue operating its uberX service in the city. The legislation mandates, among other things, strict background checks and insurance requirements, and also prevents rideshare companies from picking up passengers who hail them on the street. "From the beginning, Uber has required extensive background checks, vehicle inspections and top quality insurance coverage," the company wrote in a blog post. "This legislation affirms that responsibility."
