o Obama Calls on FCC to Implement "Strongest Possible" Net Neutrality Rules
Washington, DC -- Calling the preservation of an open Internet "essential" to the U.S. economy, President Obama on Monday called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to implement the "strongest possible rules" to protect net neutrality. "I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what you can do or see online," wrote Obama. His proposed rules would keep ISPs from blocking or intentionally slowing down -- or "throttling" -- websites, and ban the paid prioritization of sites from owners willing to pay for faster speeds. They also would increase transparency to points of interconnection between ISPs and the rest of the Internet. "`Net neutrality' has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation -- but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted," wrote Obama. "We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas."

o ShoreTel Receives Beefed Up $574 Million Takeover Bid from Mitel Networks
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- ShoreTel, a Sunnyvale-based maker of IP phone systems and unified communications tools, said on Monday it has received a beefed up $574 million takeover bid from Canada-based Mitel Networks. Mitel is offering $8.50 a share, consisting $8.10 in cash and the remainder in stock. The company previously had rejected Mitel's original offer of $8.10 a share in cash, or $540 million. ShareTel said it will "carefully review and evaluate the revised proposal to determine the course of action that it believes is in the best interest of the company's stockholders."

o San Francisco-Based AppDirect Acquires Leftronic
San Francisco -- AppDirect, the San Francisco-based developer of a monetization and management platform connecting providers and consumers of cloud services, said on Monday it has acquired Leftronic, a Y Combinator company providing real-time business data and analytics dashboards. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. AppDirect said the acquisition expands its data management and visualization capabilities. Launched in 2010 with seed funding from Y Combinator, Leftronic offers a data visualization platform that companies use to monitor key metrics and performance indicators from across their businesses. Clients include Cisco, Nike, HomeAway, Yale University, Twilio and Vodafone. Leftronic will continue to operate as an independent entity, with its entire staff joining AppDirect.

o San Jose-Based SunPower Acquires SolarBridge Technologies
San Jose, Calif. -- SunPower, a San Jose-based maker of solar panels and systems, said on Monday it has acquired Texas-based SolarBridge Technologies, a developer of microinverter technology for the solar industry. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. SunPower said it will utilize the technology, which converts direct current (DC) generated by a single solar photovoltaic panel into alternating current (AC), to develop new microinverters for use in its high-efficiency solar panels. Solar panels integrated with SolarBridge's microinverters can be directly installed, eliminating the need to mount or assemble additional components on the roof or the side of a home.
