o WSJ: Google Barge Project Derailed Due to Fire Safety Concerns

Mountain View, Calif. -- A plan by Mountain View-based Google to turn mysterious barges into floating technology showrooms was scrapped last year amid fire safety concerns from the Coast Guard, The Wall Street Journal reported. The barges, which had been located near San Francisco and Portland, Maine, sparked widespread speculation last year about their intended use. Google eventually said the barges would serve as "interactive space[s] where people can learn about new technology," with the San Francisco location drawing an estimated 1,200 visitors a day. According to the Journal, however, the company's plans fell apart over safety concerns. "These vessels will have over 5,000 gallons of fuel on the main deck and a substantial amount of combustible material on board," wrote Robert Gauvin, the Coast Guard's acting chief of commercial vessel compliance, in an email to the company's contractor last March. Months later, a Coast Guard inspector warned of the need for increased safety measures in case "people are forced to jump overboard on the waterside (like a fire)." Google has since moved the San Francisco barge to Stockton, while the Maine barge has been dismantled.

o Single Database Login to Help Law Enforcement Better Fight Terrorism

Washington, DC -- Following three years of development, law enforcement officials now will be able to use a single login to access multiple databases that potentially could help thwart terrorist activity and crimes such as school shootings, Nextgov reported. Databases included in the project include the Homeland Security Information Network, the Justice Department's Regional Information Sharing Systems, the intelligence community's internal networks and the FBI's Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal. "Let's say you have a lone-wolf incident or an active-shooter incident, where you need to be able to securely share information in a timely way. With a single sign-on capability, there is no wrong door," Kshemendra Paul, program manager for the Information Sharing Environment at the Office of Director of National Intelligence, told Nextgov.
