o San Jose-Based GigOptix Withdraws Offer for GSI Technology

San Jose, Calif. -- GigOptix, a San Jose-based supplier of semiconductor and optical communications components, on Friday withdrew its offer to acquire Sunnyvale-based GSI Technology, a developer of memory chips. GigOptix first proposed the acquisition in a letter to GSI's board in August, and was offering $6.50 a share in cash and stock. "We were disappointed that… our offer was dismissed without giving us the opportunity to discuss its merits directly with their board of directors," said Avi Katz, the chairman and CEO of GigOptix. "While we have continued to wait patiently, GSI Technology's board of directors has had almost three months to consider whether to engage in discussions and permit us to conduct due diligence."

o Report: Nearly 8 in 10 Americans Have Access to High-Speed Internet

Washington, DC -- An estimated 78.1% of people in U.S. households had a high-speed Internet connection last year, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau. But while most Americans have access to computers and high-speed connections, differences in broadband use were as large as 25% between certain age and race groups, while divides between specific income and educational attainment groups were as large as 45%. Among the nation's metro areas, Boulder, Colo., had one of the highest rates of high-speed Internet use at 96.9, while Laredo, Texas, had one of the lowest rates at 69.3 percent. "In the past we've only been able to look at computer and Internet use patterns down to the state level, but with this new research we can actually start to understand what's happening in American cities," said Thom File, a Census Bureau sociologist and the report's author. "As computing technologies continue to evolve and become more central in American life, it's increasingly important to understand where disparities and divides exist across the country." In the Bay Area, for instance, residents of Napa, San Francisco and San Jose had rates of computer and high-speed Internet use well above the national average, while metro areas in the nearby Central Valley -- including Bakersfield, Fresno and Hanford -- had significantly lower numbers.
