Redwood City, Calif. -- Shutterfly, the Redwood City-based operator of a digital photo and personalized products site, said on Monday it has acquired Los Angeles-based GrooveBook, developer of a subscription service that sends customers monthly keepsake books of their mobile phone photos. The $14.5 million deal includes an unspecified upfront purchase amount, plus a future performance-based earn-out. "By adding GrooveBook to our family of brands, we will introduce a new photo book form factor while leveraging the viral, social and word of mouth nature of the GrooveBook mobile apps," said Jeffrey Housenbold, the president and CEO of Shutterfly. GrooveBook is an iPhone and Android app and subscription service that prints up to 100 mobile phone photos in a 4.5-inch x 6.5-inch book, and mails it to customers each month for $2.99. Spending on IT is forecast to jump 3.3%, with companies ramping up digital channels and technologies that touch the customer, such as mobile applications. To free up additional money, CIOs have reduced maintenance spending from 63% to 57% of their total IT budgets over the past three years by retiring legacy systems, investing in process discipline and sourcing more effectively.
