o Mountain View-Based Veradocs Emerges from Stealth with $14 Million

Mountain View, Calif. -- Veradocs, the Mountain View-based developer of a data security platform designed to let users secure and safely share digital information across platforms and devices, said on Tuesday it has emerged from stealth mode after raising $14 million in a new round of funding. Battery Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Amplify Partners and angel investors. The company also has named Robin Daniels, the former head of enterprise marketing at Box, as its CMO, while Roger Lee, general partner at Battery, has joined its board. Veradocs' technology allows users to set security and sharing policies for corporate data, and have those policies follow that data wherever it goes. The platform allows users to set and change policies in real-time, then track where data is going, who's trying to access it and what they are trying to do with it. The company was founded by Arora and Prakash Linga, whose previous startup, RAPsphere, was sold to Appsense in 2012. Its platform is currently in private beta, with generally availability expected in early 2015.

o San Francisco-Based Breezeworks Lands $5 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Breezeworks, a San Francisco-based developer of smartphone business manager apps, said on Tuesday it has raised $5 million in its first round of funding, led by Evan Williams' Obvious Ventures. Other participants included Marc Benioff of Salesforce.com, James Murdoch of 21st Century Fox, Jeff Skoll, David Sacks of Yammer/Microsoft, Max Levchin and Peter Thiel. The company's Apple and Android apps are designed to let independent service professionals run their businesses entirely from their smartphones, carrying out tasks such as scheduling appointments, managing jobs and collecting payments.

o Founder of S.F.-Based Medivation Wins EY Entrepreneur of the Year

San Francisco -- David Hung, the founder, president and CEO of San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical firm Medivation, has been named overall national winner of the 2014 EY Entrepreneur of the Year. Hung, who also won in the Life Sciences category, was chosen for his work creating the company, which focuses on the rapid development of therapies to treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. All told, three of the program's 11 national winners hailed from the Northern California region. Tod Sacerdoti, the founder and CEO of San Francisco-based BrightRoll, won in the Media, Entertainment and Communications category, and Fedele Bauccio, the co-founder and CEO of Palo Alto-based Bon Appétit Management, won in the Retail and Consumer Products category.

o Merkle Acquires San Francisco-Based 500friends

San Francisco -- Merkle, a Maryland-based provider of customer relationship marketing services, said on Tuesday it has acquired San Francisco-based 500friends, developer of a cloud-based platform used by clients to carry out omni-channel loyalty programs and personalized customer retention campaigns. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is Merkle's first in the customer loyalty space. "We see a tremendous opportunity in the customer loyalty segment of the market as more companies are investing in loyalty as a key customer growth strategy," said David Williams, Merkle's chairman and CEO. 500friends's web-based lifecycle marketing suite, called LoyaltyPlus, allows users to see all customer interactions across in-store, online and mobile channels, resulting in more effective loyalty programs. Since launching in 2010, the company now works with more than 50 large retailers, including 1-800 Flowers and Dermalogica.

o California No. 37 on Forbes "Best States for Business" List

Utah has jumped into the No. 1 spot on Forbes' newly released list of the "Best States for Business," which ranks California at No. 37. Utah, which was No. 3 a year ago, topped North Dakota, North Carolina and last year's winner, Virginia, in the annual rankings, which examine factors for business such as costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. California moved up two spots from a year ago, and now has advanced four spots since 2012, when it ranked No. 41. "Though California has been under duress in recent years from the dramatic fall in home prices and reduced state tax revenues, its outlook looks bright," Forbes wrote. "Economic and job growth are both expected to be strong over the next five years. Another plus is the $44 billion in venture capital money invested in California companies over the past three years, an amount which is almost five times the total of any other state." The complete rankings are available at the link below.
