San Jose, Calif. -- CipherCloud, the San Jose-based developer of a cloud security platform, said on Wednesday it has raised $50 million in a new round of funding, led by Transamerica Ventures. Delta Partners and previous backers Andreessen Horowitz and T-Venture, the venture capital arm of Deutsche Telekom, also participated. The four-year-old company said it will use the proceeds to fuel its go-to-market activities, support international growth in Europe and the Asia Pacific, drive enterprise adoption of its cloud security platform and accelerate product development efforts. CipherCloud currently boasts more than 3 million users of its platform, which is designed to help large companies adopt cloud applications -- including Salesforce.com, Microsoft Office 365, ServiceNow and Box -- while controlling and securing their data.

o Cupertino-Based Apple Releases Development Kit for Apple Watch

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple has released a set of software tools that will allow developers to begin designing apps specifically for its Apple Watch, which is due out early next year. The software, known as WatchKit, will allow developers to create tools letting users of the watch turn the lights off after they've left the house, access flight details at the airport or reroute their transit when a train or bus is late. Apps will be able to incorporate what the Cupertino-based company is calling "Glances," which quickly show users information such as news and sports scores, alarm system status or the next step of a recipe. Apple's WatchKit site includes tools such as programming guides, human interface guidelines and templates. Developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch beginning next year.

o Forecast: Holiday E-Commerce Spending to Grow 16%

Reston, Va. -- E-commerce spending during the holiday season is expected to rise 16% in the U.S. this year, according to a new forecast from comScore. Online retail spending is forecast to reach $61.0 billion, up from $52.8 billion a year ago. "The 2014 online holiday shopping season is shaping up to be a bright one," said Gian Fulgoni, comScore's executive chairman emeritus. "Although some lasting effects of the great recession still provide some overhang on the economy, many of the latest indicators point toward signs of optimism for consumer spending during the holidays. Negative economic sentiment is at a five-year low, the stock market is near all-time highs, and inflation has been kept in check." Fulgoni said one negative is the lack of growth in middle-class wages from a year ago.
