o Palo Alto-Based Geenio Raises $2M in Seed Funding, Launches Platform

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Geenio, the Palo Alto-based developer of a cloud-based learning platform for enterprise customers, said on Friday it has raised $2 million in a new seed round of funding from several individual investors. The company said it will use the proceeds to continue building its team and developing its product. Geenio also said it has officially launched its subscription-based system, which is used to create interactive online courses and manage learning processes across organizations. "The original idea for Geenio sprung out of a need to onboard and train our own early employees," said founder and CEO Konstantin Andreev. "We realized that most available tools did not adhere to modern web app standards. Rather, what we encountered was a lot of interfaces and user experiences that were consistent with the technologies of the mid 1990s."

o Sunnyvale-Based Pinnatta Lands $1.2M in Funding, Hits 1 Million Users

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Pinnatta, the Sunnyvale-based developer of a mobile messaging platform allowing users to exchange interactive messages, said on Friday it has raised an additional $1.2 million in funding and surpassed 1 million registered users. Participants in the round, which increases the company's total backing to $3.7 million since its inception, included Odyssey Venture Partners, PJ Tech Catalyst, Lebara, Andrew Wright and Hirokazu Mashita. The company's iPhone, Android and Amazon apps offer more than 500 interactive cards, personalized videos and customized messages, which recipients can interact with by touching, rubbing, shaking, swiping, pinching or blowing on their phones. "This new round of funding will help us bring Pinnatta to more regions and more devices like the iPad in the in the coming year, in addition to hiring new talent," said co-founder and CEO George Spanoudakis.

o Roche Acquires Redwood City-Based Bina Technologies

Redwood City, Calif. -- Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche said on Friday it has acquired Redwood City-based Bina Technologies, developer of a big data research platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bina will be integrated into the Roche Sequencing unit, and will continue to focus on the development of its genomic analysis tool. Bina's genomic management tool is designed to improve the speed and cost of genomic analyses. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently selected the platform to provide whole genome, whole exome and SNP Chip DNA data analysis as part of its Million Veteran Program (MVP), which aims to enroll 1 million veterans. Bina is backed by Sierra Ventures, Signatures Capital, Columbus Nova Technology Partners and AME Cloud Ventures.

o S.F.-Based GI Partners to Acquire Canadian Healthcare IT Firm Logibec

San Francisco -- GI Partners, middle market private equity firm based in San Francisco, said on Friday it will acquire Canadian healthcare IT company Logibec from current owner OMERS Private Equity. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Logibec, which has approximately 300 employees, specializes in clinical and administrative information systems. "We strongly believe in the company's recurring revenue model, providing solid downside protection for our investment, coupled with the company's clear growth potential," said Dave Kreter, vice president of GI Partners. "We will pursue various strategic initiatives to unlock that potential, such as introducing new product lines, expanding into new geographies and executing add-on acquisitions."

o T-Mobile to Pay More Than $90 Million to Settle FTC "Cramming" Suit

Washington, DC -- Wireless carrier T-Mobile will pay at least $90 million to settle allegations that it billed customers for unauthorized third-arty charges -- a practice known as mobile cramming. Under the settlement, which settles the Federal Trade Commission's lawsuit against T-Mobile filed in July, the company will offer full refunds to all affected customers. The suit claimed that T-Mobile allowed third parties to "cram" unauthorized charges -- for services like horoscopes, love tips and celebrity gossip -- onto customer bills, receiving 35%-40% of each charge. "Consumers should be able to trust that their mobile phone bills reflect the charges they authorized and nothing more," said FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez. In addition to refunds T-Mobile will pay $18 million in fines and penalties to the attorneys general of all 50 states and DC, as well as $4.5 million to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
