o Sunnyvale-Based Quanergy Systems Raises $30 Million in First Round

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Quanergy Systems, a Sunnyvale-based developer of sensors and software used in advanced driver assistance systems, said on Thursday it has raised $30 million in its first round of funding, led by Rising Tide Fund. Wicklow Capital, Motus Ventures, Wardenclyffe Partners (established by founders of Tesla Motors) and private investors also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $34.5 million. Quanergy said it will use the funds to accelerate the development and commercialization of its 3D LiDAR (light detection and ranging) products, which it said can be integrated with vehicle controls to make possible semi-autonomous and autonomous driving, and a 90% reduction in motor vehicle accidents. http://www.quanergy.com

o Zoosk Makes Major Management Changes, Delays Plans for IPO

San Francisco -- Zoosk, the San Francisco-based operator of an online dating platform, has named Kelly Steckelberg as its new CEO. Steckelberg, previously the company's CFO and COO, succeeds co-founder Shayan Zadeh, who will remain on the board of directors. In addition Alex Mehr, the company's president and co-founder, also will step down, but remain board members. "While this was an extremely difficult decision, Alex and I agreed that this was the right inflection point for Zoosk to carry out the long-planned transition from a founder-led company to a professionally-led company," said Zadeh. In connection with the moves, Zoosk also said it will delay its plans to go public, a decision it expects to reevaluate in the coming months. The company had filed in April to raise up to $100 million in its IPO.

o San Francisco-Based First Opinion Lands $6 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- First Opinion, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile app that provides remote personal health consultations from physicians, said on Thursday it has landed $6 million in its first round of funding. Polaris Partners led the round, which also included participation from previous backers True Ventures, Felicis Ventures, Scrum Ventures and Monashees Capital. First Opinion offers users 24-hour access to trained physicians via text messaging. Users are able to text health-related questions, as well as photos, to a doctor in the company's network and receive a response within 5 minutes. Users are paired with a primary doctor, who helps them determine if a trip to the doctor's office is actually needed. Over the past year, approximately 100,000 healthcare consultations have been conducted using the app. McKay Thomas, the co-founder and CEO of First Opinion, said the company will use the funds to "expand our network of doctors, grow internal infrastructures and focus on fine tuning our simple but proven approach to resolving complex healthcare issues." The company also previously raised $2.6 million in seed funding.

o Government Sues Sprint for Billing Unauthorized Charges to Customers

Washington, DC -- The federal government is suing wireless carrier Sprint for allegedly billing customers tens of millions of dollars in unauthorized third-party charges. The suit, filed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), claims the company allowed third parties to "cram" unauthorized charges -- for services like ringtones, wallpapers and text message subscriptions -- onto mobile-phone bills, ignoring customer complaints. "Consumers ended up paying tens of millions of dollars in unauthorized charges, even though many of them had no idea that third parties could even place charges on their bills," said Richard Cordray, director of the CFPB. The suit seeks refunds for affected consumers, as well as unspecified penalties. Another wireless carrier, AT&T Mobility, in October agreed to pay $105 million to settle similar allegations.

o Online Spending Tops $1B Each Weekday for Second Straight Week

Reston, Va. -- For the first time in history, Americans have spent at least $1 billion on e-commerce sales each weekday for two straight weeks, according to new figures from comScore. The most recent week, beginning with Green Monday (Dec. 8), took in $8.6 billion in online sales, up 12% from the same period year ago. "Despite a slight deceleration in growth rates during this past week, we still observed strong spending in total with five more days surpassing $1 billion in sales to bring us to 14 for the holiday season to date," said Gian Fulgoni, the chairman emeritus of comScore. "While it's not uncommon for the week after Cyber Week to experience a relative lull… it is encouraging that the 15% spending growth rate for the season-to-date remains slightly above our forecast of 14% for the season as a whole." Fulgoni said his firm expects to see one last surge in online buying leading up to Free Shipping Day on Dec. 18.
